<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpXA9Qi7UpFiMFzi1bU2blP8qO7iOc9t-d8q8EPrP4g6WRA5PnnhVr8pcXvH9o-TpvfJTX8cdUonLlsDFfViNZptc_-9u32sh20nzSo0aqVkuq1Z2aSx7bqNZ-8fb0yXfsPD4iXA0jnEQ/s1600/big_kid_backpack_8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="468" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpXA9Qi7UpFiMFzi1bU2blP8qO7iOc9t-d8q8EPrP4g6WRA5PnnhVr8pcXvH9o-TpvfJTX8cdUonLlsDFfViNZptc_-9u32sh20nzSo0aqVkuq1Z2aSx7bqNZ-8fb0yXfsPD4iXA0jnEQ/s640/big_kid_backpack_8.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
once again, i used <a href="http://www.made-by-rae.com/2009/03/finally-here-toddler-backpack-pattern/">made by rae's toddler backpack pattern</a>, which is truly a magical thing to sew. it really does make you feel like a sewing ninja to make a backpack! i used the instructions for the school sized version, adding a couple of inches to the original backpack's width and height.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhK__tYDABHYKK_HM3_1oHMWVkPkEH3eM9zQe5oUbi_i5rYAIllRbima-SkIxImJNtOSwmqZl9jNJ1ZYt0hsoeiO-jhpxnjjAulbtd2geaEc7fVC0Dga8_ZNUHtgC93HzvvLej-JcCM5FM/s1600/big_kid_backpack_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhK__tYDABHYKK_HM3_1oHMWVkPkEH3eM9zQe5oUbi_i5rYAIllRbima-SkIxImJNtOSwmqZl9jNJ1ZYt0hsoeiO-jhpxnjjAulbtd2geaEc7fVC0Dga8_ZNUHtgC93HzvvLej-JcCM5FM/s640/big_kid_backpack_1.jpg" width="632" /></a></div>
<br />
the main fabric is <a href="https://www.fabric.com/buy/0456601/cotton-steel-printshop-this-that-black">this + that</a> from cotton + steel's printshop collection. i'm pretty sure cotton + steel can do no wrong. i originally bought the fabric to line a jacket a made for margot (which is next on my to blog about list...once it gets to be jacket wearing temperatures) and i had just enough left to eek out the front and side panels for this.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCNIrscmOvrAnLi66RM7jIC4DRbXG71LhAjl3p6nkv7GXh2fx4ruWv-7sXTHfsI5A3KkMMyTv2Dcx-EwgEkDLRCJRluqA9neGxjOCWMdRB-KZZfaL195HVUaTbor2leZ7wTlnLeSd1Chc/s1600/big_kid_backpack_2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCNIrscmOvrAnLi66RM7jIC4DRbXG71LhAjl3p6nkv7GXh2fx4ruWv-7sXTHfsI5A3KkMMyTv2Dcx-EwgEkDLRCJRluqA9neGxjOCWMdRB-KZZfaL195HVUaTbor2leZ7wTlnLeSd1Chc/s640/big_kid_backpack_2.jpg" width="454" /></a></div>
<br />
for the rest of the backpack i got creative mixing and matching fabrics from my stash. i think, in total, i used no fewer than seven different fabrics. this gingham on the back is one of my favorites. it was from a stash of vintage fabrics i inherited from my grandmother, and has shown up several times around here, like on this <a href="http://hopingforrocketships.blogspot.com/2016/03/little-zippy-top.html">little zippy top</a> and this <a href="http://hopingforrocketships.blogspot.com/2016/01/sewn-baby-doll-bedding.html">baby doll bedding</a>. sadly, i think i'm out now.<br />

<br />
for the straps, bottom and piping i used this faux leather i got from jo ann's. it made the bag a total beast to sew, caused me to break two needles, and led to more than a little swearing, but it was totally worth it in the end. it really makes the bag, i think.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_on102TDJD0We6h5PQhLVooAGg-X-wr1Tq-Q3ISdIBd3SSx7eNGkjODY03rLDp6tpl-6MMHD0i8CsOFo_MQm1wJd1FaupzULiGzlT6OV-RHxNxAeAUn4Ewn2kBgZUe20vPhrswx1PCUw/s1600/big_kid_backpack_5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_on102TDJD0We6h5PQhLVooAGg-X-wr1Tq-Q3ISdIBd3SSx7eNGkjODY03rLDp6tpl-6MMHD0i8CsOFo_MQm1wJd1FaupzULiGzlT6OV-RHxNxAeAUn4Ewn2kBgZUe20vPhrswx1PCUw/s640/big_kid_backpack_5.jpg" width="514" /></a></div>
i also added two side pockets and an inside pocket. my favorite is the stretchy side pocket that can hold a drink bottle. ridiculous.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSPGsbiXi1OMGPJ-pnYQfeLGgZnoGkfeGlQCq9FXVGFLsZlZaCUqQXva9rY2SPVjJoj3DRAeu7F-egYTN176DAqWPqk6PiciusxB9ca2ubBmve4n01wyow2Ocf6hVxGzRS-mGSirmrxqY/s1600/big_kid_backpack_7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSPGsbiXi1OMGPJ-pnYQfeLGgZnoGkfeGlQCq9FXVGFLsZlZaCUqQXva9rY2SPVjJoj3DRAeu7F-egYTN176DAqWPqk6PiciusxB9ca2ubBmve4n01wyow2Ocf6hVxGzRS-mGSirmrxqY/s640/big_kid_backpack_7.jpg" width="466" /></a></div>
like the last one i made, i also did a sandwich style lining with bias bound seams. fun fact, the gingham on the lining is actually a different fabric, and i still didn't have enough, so polka dot pairing it was! with all of the layers and faux leather, the bias binding was a total pain. i actually ended up hand stitching down the second side of the bias tape. it's not very pretty if you look close, but it photographs well :) <br />
<br />

<br />
this name tag holder is another one of my favorite parts (ok...so it's maybe all my favorite). i was really pleased when i realized i could use the plastic-y cover from a pack of twist up crayons to make the holder. upcycle for the win!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
my only disappointment is that the shape along the edges is a bit wonky. i used super heavy, sew in interfacing, but i undercut it slightly to not have any more bulk in the seams. i'm not sure this was the best choice (i think it says sew in for a reason...), but it definitely has more structure than the last one i made, which i think is necessary for the bigger size.<br />
<br />

margot is a huge fan too. she loves wearing it to school each day, and hanging it up in her room when she gets home. <br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8cRB4yK5gFjHJ86e3ZTzJOc2tzfJTFhIUjd1O68y6Ea2tWPXUZeLS-slRN6AizessEa7H7LXl1HbdSWnmsm3UzVQNNQXY8xSdzNkWcJRY_NaymZCP46SZKhFE2IAZYlahjxlS9CVtRE8/s1600/sewn_swimsuit_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="494" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8cRB4yK5gFjHJ86e3ZTzJOc2tzfJTFhIUjd1O68y6Ea2tWPXUZeLS-slRN6AizessEa7H7LXl1HbdSWnmsm3UzVQNNQXY8xSdzNkWcJRY_NaymZCP46SZKhFE2IAZYlahjxlS9CVtRE8/s640/sewn_swimsuit_1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
spoonflower was recently running a special on their sport lycra fabric, especially well *suited* for swimwear, and i couldn't pass it up. especially with <a href="http://www.spoonflower.com/fabric/5043139-watercolor-popsicles-by-littlearrowdesign">this popsicle fabric</a> by the little arrow design company. it just screams summer fun.<br />
<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
*margot's new favorite thing is to 'pose' for pictures. she's great at it </div>
<br />
i drafted the pattern myself from margot's swimsuit from last summer that still fit. i then read and re-read every online kid's swimsuit sewing tutorial ever written and sewed it in my head over and over again before working up the courage to cut into the fabric (that's normal, right...). i found the awesomely detailed tutorials from <a href="http://creativechicksatplay.blogspot.com/">creative chicks' blog</a> the most helpful, especially the <a href="http://creativechicksatplay.blogspot.com/2011/04/swimsuit-questions-leg-opening-elastic.html">leg opening</a> and <a href="http://creativechicksatplay.blogspot.com/2011/04/continuous-binding-and-straps.html">continuous bias strap</a> tutorials. i love that fantastically talented people share their knowledge online. thanks for being awesome!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
all in all, it was a pretty straightforward sew. the only thing that almost drove me crazy was that my double needle wouldn't work with the spoonflower sports lycra. no idea why. it would sew a single line, but not the second. it worked just fine with the black fabric, which is from joann's, but a similar weight, stretch and sheen. i spent way too much time trying to figure it out, to no avail. i ended up just using a zigzag stitch around the legholes. but if anyone has any suggestions, i'd love to hear them. i did read that there's such a thing as a stretch double needle, so maybe that'd work.<br />

i did realize after the fact that with the way i attached the elastic (per creative chicks' <a href="http://creativechicksatplay.blogspot.com/2011/04/continuous-binding-and-straps.html">tutorial</a>), i didn't need to add seam allowances to the arms and neckline, so the neckline is a little higher and wider than i needed it to be. next time.<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjf0maOLX2PwIT9WEQ_Sp8JmCSY0_xba0AIQgaakbDDB5raq6MNihItmfMBEk1YBYBJ0brB8M3cDki_cL_v6eZM-1pnzR4GFVEh4RJcYWOYAyWPJNG6II8xt0T1A7Hg2omUvyJ1sZRNTiI/s1600/sewn_swimsuit_4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; display: inline !important; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="514" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjf0maOLX2PwIT9WEQ_Sp8JmCSY0_xba0AIQgaakbDDB5raq6MNihItmfMBEk1YBYBJ0brB8M3cDki_cL_v6eZM-1pnzR4GFVEh4RJcYWOYAyWPJNG6II8xt0T1A7Hg2omUvyJ1sZRNTiI/s640/sewn_swimsuit_4.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
i'm really happy with the finished product. it really looks like something store bought. the spoonflower fabric is a dream to work with. it's stretchy, but fairly heavy weight, so it doesn't curl or deform while sewing. it also has a 54" printed width, so one yard of fabric would probably make four or five toddler sized swimsuits.<br />
<br />

margot is also a big fan. i finished it late one evening, and she insisted on wearing it around the house. and the next day she nonstop asked to go swimming with her new popsicles.<br />

anyone else sewing any swimsuits? anyone else fall victim to the spoonflower sport lycra sale? anyone up for a fabric swap? i'm not sure how many years i can make margot a popsicle suit from all the leftover yardage.<br />

i had a really fun time documenting the process over on <a href="https://www.instagram.com/libby.m.sharp/">instagram</a>. i was really late in the game with joining up, but i've really been enjoying the community of creatives over there.<br />
<br />
and the super fun part about this all was that i made some digital copies of it before painting to play around with color options, so now i have a 'sharp family coloring page' that margot really enjoys. she has probably asked for me to print one out three times since putting up the picture last week :)<br />
<br />
i think it'd be fun to make a new one every couple of years, working up to having a small watercolor portrait gallery wall. and a 'our family through the years' coloring book. what about you? what's your favorite way to document your family?<br />
libbyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06286438360185176313noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8134524590556392582.post-8899812245896500402016-03-20T14:57:00.000-04:002016-03-20T14:57:16.458-04:00little zippy top.hmmm...apparently it's been a while since i've been around these parts. no worries, i've been making stuff, just not taking the time to blog about it. i blame instagram. it's so much easier. so, if you're missing me, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/libby.m.sharp/">head on over and follow me</a>. be prepared to be bombarded by margot cuteness though. you've been warned.<br />
<br />
this post is also going to be full of margot cuteness. with spring upon us, margot is in need of some comfy, easy breezy clothes. goodbye endless layers. hello shorts, flip flops and tees.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLdpwVLdJ17n9HgKyx3D3vVrZUUk6-XNP-SRjax9AZ9aufKzJpguXzU_xiIB7HQbJ2IK9vecqaL5WcS-r4c0ucoMP9pNAYu-xpS_VmgfqrqxA2dvHPr1xBfGyZYYxDlh9pbFPRzgNkea8/s1600/little_zippy_3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="498" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLdpwVLdJ17n9HgKyx3D3vVrZUUk6-XNP-SRjax9AZ9aufKzJpguXzU_xiIB7HQbJ2IK9vecqaL5WcS-r4c0ucoMP9pNAYu-xpS_VmgfqrqxA2dvHPr1xBfGyZYYxDlh9pbFPRzgNkea8/s640/little_zippy_3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
this is my first <a href="http://seekatesew.bigcartel.com/product/little-zippy-top-girls-18m-to-10">little zippy top</a> by see kate sew. i actually bought this pattern in the adult size too, hoping to finally break through my fear of sewing me sized things. i choose to think of this mini version as my trial run.<br />
<br />
it's a pretty great top. it sews up quickly, fits great (i made the 3T size), and is basic enough that i can imagine making a million different variations. and that zipper!<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsrlKi8yzK4rKCYdNr9hvXnZwcFyAzIZz8EsxqXoG4Y2Ku036YrGoLZOtnNHLXJVH_82nHtGBDi-bMr8_35CdhLmB3wxqYYuH_PFHIWRr6bCNkuM_U1sDaa3B3b6FtuiLSnIa8_uU9tcY/s1600/little_zippy_4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="470" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsrlKi8yzK4rKCYdNr9hvXnZwcFyAzIZz8EsxqXoG4Y2Ku036YrGoLZOtnNHLXJVH_82nHtGBDi-bMr8_35CdhLmB3wxqYYuH_PFHIWRr6bCNkuM_U1sDaa3B3b6FtuiLSnIa8_uU9tcY/s640/little_zippy_4.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
it was definitely the selling point. i was actually playing around with self drafting a shirt just like this when i came across the pattern. and after pinterest stalking all of the adorable zippy tops around blog land, i was sold. and the pattern goes up to size ten! so it's totally worth it.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIYz3iPuyQLyTN3tRLtBRzklbmYK715fxew46JbSukAXQyj1S61NZncVcGTW8WojCwD9jjTjcl8PV0AkZM1f9LTlxyXyQbQ2zmwFpvxw0Vm6IQOCd2XJoIc81lcixkwTUApOUY0-LTngI/s1600/little_zippy_2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIYz3iPuyQLyTN3tRLtBRzklbmYK715fxew46JbSukAXQyj1S61NZncVcGTW8WojCwD9jjTjcl8PV0AkZM1f9LTlxyXyQbQ2zmwFpvxw0Vm6IQOCd2XJoIc81lcixkwTUApOUY0-LTngI/s640/little_zippy_2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
i love how simple this pattern was, but i didn't really love how the zipper was sewn in, so i changed it up, sandwiching the zipper between the two facing pieces, rather than just sewing it into the inside. this, i think, makes for a neater finished product. i'm still not totally happy with how i did it, so if you have any suggestions on how to sew a zipper like this, i'd love to hear them.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtu7n0EaZ0e42lOJ8KsV282j1PPxHb_thUYoRZRw-MiCA0WgfACu0a85Vs6XUTb0GkSYsMnvxttfLDRlhLZUgYzJLA1x2xB4Im6ColzWMgYPsVgWVcwlzHg8qQg0ppd-3oUmBWubR-tRc/s1600/little_zippy_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="476" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtu7n0EaZ0e42lOJ8KsV282j1PPxHb_thUYoRZRw-MiCA0WgfACu0a85Vs6XUTb0GkSYsMnvxttfLDRlhLZUgYzJLA1x2xB4Im6ColzWMgYPsVgWVcwlzHg8qQg0ppd-3oUmBWubR-tRc/s640/little_zippy_1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
i can say with certainty that i'll be making more of these for margot this summer. and hopefully even one for me. what's on your list for warm weather sewing?<br />
<br />

<br />
i'll admit, i'm not much a fan of valentines day, and we don't really do anything special for it (except for the couple of times jon has tricked me into celebrating...). i am a sucker for a cute card, though, so i thought i'd make a few free printable designs to share with you all. all three of the design below can be downloaded <a href="https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B1eo7dLlKc0FdF9Xc1A1Vm44UUU">here</a>!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4bEg_fdFZ34mpaI6Cu2kyrRiIdlWoGLyl3cQKVow6DeoFcM8g1ULdVd6VS2ZhHytD4oZvCgfvOuSFLKrB_ho0sivZ565eaCTlA1blzcWNXhJhOKWC3d__ZwQoXjnkxSYgQb-YPh0oNhQ/s1600/2_hot_dog_valentine.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="522" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4bEg_fdFZ34mpaI6Cu2kyrRiIdlWoGLyl3cQKVow6DeoFcM8g1ULdVd6VS2ZhHytD4oZvCgfvOuSFLKrB_ho0sivZ565eaCTlA1blzcWNXhJhOKWC3d__ZwQoXjnkxSYgQb-YPh0oNhQ/s640/2_hot_dog_valentine.jpg" width="720" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
first up, hot dogs. because nothing quite conveys the adorable side of love (or like) like a couple of frankfurters!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEieMHEd829v_ycBqIzWzTSU4Y_wF2WUbu4i2Bk3-NOlWB1fEZXjIDvy7ZQjUsWAI6_vkvQ_E0dsw5oSW7BKomhCsGyDUBhMPawVOax20HQaTxakwAW51CZ2DaO1igLPaQUshon2fBGOW4g/s1600/1_lego_valentine_printable.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEieMHEd829v_ycBqIzWzTSU4Y_wF2WUbu4i2Bk3-NOlWB1fEZXjIDvy7ZQjUsWAI6_vkvQ_E0dsw5oSW7BKomhCsGyDUBhMPawVOax20HQaTxakwAW51CZ2DaO1igLPaQUshon2fBGOW4g/s640/1_lego_valentine_printable.jpg" width="720" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
and if hot dogs aren't your thing, then how about legos? they're currently a fav around our house, with margot asking almost every evening to 'play with daddy's legos' (because yes, most of the legos bought in our house are for jon, not our kid...).</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiLwvSlYSw8j9goPe_OB5MJP33yywo-Lk3LDqmkZM5NryolPJbY2w9unL3Lj8erFm3rmRTl3Xi0qa3CN9qTphJi4x-bOqYYuO4qWtYm4H1BLJuWm4IjoDDhEdEUOFOq2a-xHVR69oKt3s/s1600/3_valentines_printable.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="504" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiLwvSlYSw8j9goPe_OB5MJP33yywo-Lk3LDqmkZM5NryolPJbY2w9unL3Lj8erFm3rmRTl3Xi0qa3CN9qTphJi4x-bOqYYuO4qWtYm4H1BLJuWm4IjoDDhEdEUOFOq2a-xHVR69oKt3s/s640/3_valentines_printable.jpg" width="720" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
these two cards are both bi-fold style, so you can add your own sappy valentines message to the inside. to make, simply print off your card of choice, score along the left hand side of the card with an exacto knife (all the way across the paper makes it easiest), and then fold along the score and cut along the remaining three sides (cutting through both layers). easy peasy.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWGi6yQS8zBWT-ND50f8i_1w8xrY5mZBFdp3r8rR6sawNDI7Y_mrIYXRWO7zq5HLZHR7B57Om2SmKztiYGvsO1FxQ8l22ES4t2ZUqgSCv6csLgpDdIW2h5mQnhX3nIAFw-o_S3NNWlKpU/s1600/4_lego_valentine_printables.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="475" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWGi6yQS8zBWT-ND50f8i_1w8xrY5mZBFdp3r8rR6sawNDI7Y_mrIYXRWO7zq5HLZHR7B57Om2SmKztiYGvsO1FxQ8l22ES4t2ZUqgSCv6csLgpDdIW2h5mQnhX3nIAFw-o_S3NNWlKpU/s640/4_lego_valentine_printables.jpg" width="720" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
and of course all of this card making got me nostalgic for the good ole days of elementary school, where your biggest valentine's woe concerned who to give the cardboard card from the back of the box to (or was that just me...). so out of pining for the 'good ole days' i also made school style lego valentines. these print four to a sheet, and have the classic TO: and FROM: spots, perfect for sharing with classmates. they kind of make me wish i was back in elementary school...</div>
<br />
so, whether you want to express your true love through meat or building blocks, or if you just want something cool to send to school with your kids, go get some free <a href="https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B1eo7dLlKc0FdF9Xc1A1Vm44UUU">printables</a>. or if you know a friend who just needs to have one of these, share the link!<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXSBetv3rwX_QYWhO44NebY4enE8rjBnxZJCoR4Pe5vy57WREvll8W46xSwtN-SNctPQ_wdIJ_PiultTfFXcHfwXNo3wsj56henVEYTeWtFRPwbW_NHkGIo1hDuzQW9wpnYNZMOIhRz5o/s1600/fox_pillow_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="446" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXSBetv3rwX_QYWhO44NebY4enE8rjBnxZJCoR4Pe5vy57WREvll8W46xSwtN-SNctPQ_wdIJ_PiultTfFXcHfwXNo3wsj56henVEYTeWtFRPwbW_NHkGIo1hDuzQW9wpnYNZMOIhRz5o/s640/fox_pillow_1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
he's so fluffy!!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
i bought the amazing mauvy (??) faux fur awhile ago, and wasn't really sure what i was going to do with it. it was too amazing to pass up though. seriously, it's the softest fabric ever.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilkV_ZDBdNYj7b5RcJQR9NzOEZEjW8tvt3cK78n6sAKCDstv_u8USbmORbXlFO_RM-hB4XHZ6y3EHnU5WVCVn9zDAxqIqKPniKsF4RQgC1GRmHSQZIeXhexbJSEyrrab9-D-siUWuvhmE/s1600/fox_pillow_5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="458" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilkV_ZDBdNYj7b5RcJQR9NzOEZEjW8tvt3cK78n6sAKCDstv_u8USbmORbXlFO_RM-hB4XHZ6y3EHnU5WVCVn9zDAxqIqKPniKsF4RQgC1GRmHSQZIeXhexbJSEyrrab9-D-siUWuvhmE/s640/fox_pillow_5.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
when i finally decided on making a fox pillow, it all came together fairly quickly (and adorably). i was pleasantly surprised at how easy the fabric was to sew with (less easy to cut and much less easy to clean up after...) and am super excited about how it turned out.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1_Zr4dETk6oV2W2yRsY77uISDVUUaWHXpwa4UAJ5RwNO1uz9SyL6v-JadV3NS0GQehzFrW0eGjcbAMZw5v4GsUDn6wPZCtVcaBFIPKmL32riP1K0enpy-oI5IkCTP_ETfI3XMrBWNNuM/s1600/fox_pillow_3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1_Zr4dETk6oV2W2yRsY77uISDVUUaWHXpwa4UAJ5RwNO1uz9SyL6v-JadV3NS0GQehzFrW0eGjcbAMZw5v4GsUDn6wPZCtVcaBFIPKmL32riP1K0enpy-oI5IkCTP_ETfI3XMrBWNNuM/s640/fox_pillow_3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
the little details are always my favorite. the ear fabric is a floral print from and old blouse. and those rosy cheeks really put him over the top in the cuteness arena.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlb5DFuAobbgvJS5rfyTo9WZRJDN8VrU1YX-T92CXY-cvuj856zAMhYTi3aUxawgzeexIOWB43U5SrmBoUlPLgI4FX9pZN0-qs4iq0CW8ohoPGES-8CMdIKmCV6qGndUs3x1G5_Pd-uM4/s1600/fox_pillow_6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="452" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlb5DFuAobbgvJS5rfyTo9WZRJDN8VrU1YX-T92CXY-cvuj856zAMhYTi3aUxawgzeexIOWB43U5SrmBoUlPLgI4FX9pZN0-qs4iq0CW8ohoPGES-8CMdIKmCV6qGndUs3x1G5_Pd-uM4/s640/fox_pillow_6.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
margot thinks it's her fox pillow. i'm pretty sure he's mine though. i just love him. so soft and the perfect spoonable size. don't tell margot...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

i'm thinking about making some more and posting them for sale. if you're interested, let me know!libbyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06286438360185176313noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8134524590556392582.post-19034540124103208852016-01-24T10:11:00.000-05:002016-01-24T10:11:00.414-05:00sewn baby doll bedding.for jon's birthday in december we got a margot free day (thanks mee mee and papa), and we spent part of it exploring all of the floors of <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/Lous-Antique-Mall/138552859525478">lou's antique mall</a> in danville, a feat we've not been able to complete with the margot in tow. there, we found an unplanned christmas gift, this super awesome baby doll bed. since i just got around to finishing the bedding for it, i thought it was fair to share now, even though it's almost the end of january.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAQFQbEOuRJwd3DC_Lc-7Zd758YkJbPql-B2WS2GGLLtF_eGT8kUXV4W5f_8yy8uMFt1VAIIn_B6_ALEsaTz3dp6BR_Vk0HOcdQtQd-afFg4D_XBg-DemJju4lJmm-lCiCAmzDCzI1Pmo/s1600/baby_bedding_2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="452" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAQFQbEOuRJwd3DC_Lc-7Zd758YkJbPql-B2WS2GGLLtF_eGT8kUXV4W5f_8yy8uMFt1VAIIn_B6_ALEsaTz3dp6BR_Vk0HOcdQtQd-afFg4D_XBg-DemJju4lJmm-lCiCAmzDCzI1Pmo/s640/baby_bedding_2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
the tiny kitty quilt i made a while ago, before we even got the bed. i wanted to practice this <a href="http://mermag.blogspot.com/2011/11/quilt-how-to.html">cat quilt block</a> from mer mag, because i was (and still am) debating using it in a larger quilt. i also made it with hopes of having a back up for margot's inseparable tiny quilt that she naps and sleeps with daily. that part was unsuccessful, but in a happy accident it turned out to fit this tiny bed perfectly.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
and every good baby bed needs baby pillows, especially a sleepy cloud pillow. i stopped short of making a tiny pillowcase for the tiny pillow, but it may happen in the future. making small doll accessories is way too fun, not to mention super quick.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-ercr0NUHyiW0VH_POxvsarVBV1wk6lXvFhQ5TY1tDfDibzeMMnFJ3dEy-fzg6FERBU90OyesTw_hmrZvTA6wMV6XE3jB9W3i0yqhka2c5eeFrA6vpb5gJlIrRIS4-wcFg1RFJPJkSVI/s1600/baby_bedding_6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-ercr0NUHyiW0VH_POxvsarVBV1wk6lXvFhQ5TY1tDfDibzeMMnFJ3dEy-fzg6FERBU90OyesTw_hmrZvTA6wMV6XE3jB9W3i0yqhka2c5eeFrA6vpb5gJlIrRIS4-wcFg1RFJPJkSVI/s640/baby_bedding_6.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
the mattress may be my favorite part. i used this <a href="http://www.supermomnocape.com/2011/04/12/how-to-make-bedding-for-a-doll-cradle/">tutorial</a> for inspiration, and quilted the layers together with x's before sewing up the fourth side. this probably looked ridiculous while i was doing it, because i'm crazy and wanted both sides to be the same. this meant i had to reach inside the layers to pass the needle back and forth. the final look was totally worth it, though. a little vintage and little modern. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
margot really enjoys having a place to put the ladies to bed. 'night, night stella.' 'night, night louise.' man, she's my favorite (margot, that is).</div>

after a good night's sleep (meaning twenty seconds in pretend play-land), louise wakes up first and tells stella to get up.<br />
<br />
i'm pretty sure that this bed will get a lot of play. not too bad for an unexpected christmas gift found on a relaxing day out. did anyone else find any exciting, not on the list but must buy gifts? did any of your christmas makes get pushed into the new year? am i still allowed to ask christmas questions?<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinPYz7WcywKXG4yVixtmjD4026lDXZ13bozj64mJSCkQq4gVKiKERaedsCZiT4j3064EZAKNC6oveXY8PwHOeM02jZS8k2tDEldNUW_1z0UY3mooUxWW56pUWTuKwXj-3NrrVQB4JgK_s/s1600/2016_calendar_printables.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinPYz7WcywKXG4yVixtmjD4026lDXZ13bozj64mJSCkQq4gVKiKERaedsCZiT4j3064EZAKNC6oveXY8PwHOeM02jZS8k2tDEldNUW_1z0UY3mooUxWW56pUWTuKwXj-3NrrVQB4JgK_s/s640/2016_calendar_printables.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
i think i'm going to make 2016 the year of printables. it's just so much fun. and once i make <a href="http://hopingforrocketships.blogspot.com/2015/11/diy-advent-calendar.html">designs</a>, i find it hard to not just put them on everything.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWwb50Xa3LJM96yuokvS72eIyHRtszHmv0se-Assc0bmPwUldtP6skSKPYJZHh289jpTagkKBd5pPcGd9hbFDZWnZnl8yg9yMHaTF6VGY9hUcJ5OPNX8weZqW4VhFW_IJM3gm9oiFzNu0/s1600/2016_calendar_printables_02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWwb50Xa3LJM96yuokvS72eIyHRtszHmv0se-Assc0bmPwUldtP6skSKPYJZHh289jpTagkKBd5pPcGd9hbFDZWnZnl8yg9yMHaTF6VGY9hUcJ5OPNX8weZqW4VhFW_IJM3gm9oiFzNu0/s640/2016_calendar_printables_02.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>

<br /></div>
so go and grab your own copies <a href="https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B1eo7dLlKc0FamdTYVFyc3JVLTQ&usp=sharing">here</a>. i've only made january through march so far. i'll update throughout the year with the next ones (consider that a resolution!). so be sure to stop back when you start running out of calendar.<br />

they're probably not the most practical of calendars, as there's not a lot of room to write stuff, but they're pretty, and that's what's really important.<br />

i like mine hung simply with washi tape (apparently beside an embroidery hoop with some unintentionally similar fabric). i think they'd also look cute as a part of a wall mounted <a href="https://www.pinterest.com/pin/90353536252118498/">clipboard</a> display (which i really want to do) or even on the fridge or taped inside of a notebook.<br />
<br />
link pictures if you use it! i'd love to see it. and if you have any other ideas for printables, let me know! <br />

i like giving handmade christmas gifts. more often than not, i have lofty goals that are never quite brought to fruition. this year though, i couldn't even manage to come up with any lofty goals. my brain was a dull hum of pinterest overload and denial that the holidays were just around the corner.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
come christmas day, this random assortment of felt breakfast food ended up being my biggest accomplishment. why would anybody ever eat anything besides <a href="http://ak-hdl.buzzfed.com/static/2014-04/enhanced/webdr07/14/14/enhanced-12859-1397501212-23.jpg">breakfast food</a>?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzZgyI-X_bi4hecgRNyJhJ3NfhQrxSF2Ux2EYASSHihhoLGkrJKpvU-8ggZ2u67xMkf3tpFuR9FCWphJ6QHrYOunRUJyz6PO0V9_QlcSjYZ47WOxRyEHiu1TN8uz7QNSag0sBOvPLWO0Y/s1600/felt_breakfast_food_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="506" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzZgyI-X_bi4hecgRNyJhJ3NfhQrxSF2Ux2EYASSHihhoLGkrJKpvU-8ggZ2u67xMkf3tpFuR9FCWphJ6QHrYOunRUJyz6PO0V9_QlcSjYZ47WOxRyEHiu1TN8uz7QNSag0sBOvPLWO0Y/s640/felt_breakfast_food_1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
i made it for my nephew, who's almost two, and probably the most ridiculously cute kid ever! i dare you to argue. just look at those eyes! that hair! that cheesy grin! and anyone that can rock buffalo plaid like that gets a ticket straight to my heart.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
since <a href="http://hopingforrocketships.blogspot.com/2015/10/felt-food.html">felt</a> <a href="http://hopingforrocketships.blogspot.com/2015/10/pizza-and-pasta-and-donuts-oh-my.html">food</a> has been a big hit with the margot lately, i figured it would go over pretty well with her cousin. i had already made margot some pancakes and pretty well perfected my felt pancake construction method (future blog post mayhaps?? comment if you'd be interested in a tutorial), so i started with those, complete with felt syrup and wooden pats of butter. and since you can't just have sugar and carbs for breakfast, felt bacon and sausage was a must.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEielY5Wyq86VhvoV_FdzjWjESNOw805N7KwCFQ-XTxu00cRLjnbBQTkB3X7gx4xInNKEwy1aIU0bm6HRk0DkK-PXEle-OoqrDRagJeHqKivTs6PAF2oEVRccEyslxaLqbqsOjzrnvmK-Rw/s1600/felt_breakfast_food_2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="492" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEielY5Wyq86VhvoV_FdzjWjESNOw805N7KwCFQ-XTxu00cRLjnbBQTkB3X7gx4xInNKEwy1aIU0bm6HRk0DkK-PXEle-OoqrDRagJeHqKivTs6PAF2oEVRccEyslxaLqbqsOjzrnvmK-Rw/s640/felt_breakfast_food_2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
these felt cinnamon rolls were fun super fun to make. i pretty much followed <a href="http://seesuzyspin.blogspot.com/2010/07/felt-food-fridays.html">these instructions</a>, but instead of hand sewing the coils together, i cheated and used hot glue. i feel no guilt over this decision, as i made the whole half dozen this way in under an hour (a huge crafting win, i must say). i sadly opted out of using puffy paint to add icing to the rolls. it adds a lot to the adorableness factor of them, but i figured, if it were margot, she'd pick it right back off in about two seconds (and then probably eat it), so her cousin would likely do the same.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxc0whyVIaACmQ7y0EwhPctLHxQQDGLi3dwIsK1ZsF98A76_8xoop9YK1orqn6wyxObNUjQTVzuj5ozfObBnoGB5riEW2Gq_Hxgo3FTMNsIa8T55q0Jv3Exs9aewk3RHLG2F5Jb5btUZ8/s1600/felt_breakfast_food_3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="508" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxc0whyVIaACmQ7y0EwhPctLHxQQDGLi3dwIsK1ZsF98A76_8xoop9YK1orqn6wyxObNUjQTVzuj5ozfObBnoGB5riEW2Gq_Hxgo3FTMNsIa8T55q0Jv3Exs9aewk3RHLG2F5Jb5btUZ8/s640/felt_breakfast_food_3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
and no breakfast spread is complete without the incredible, edible egg. sunny side up of course. for those of you that follow me on <a href="https://www.instagram.com/libby.m.sharp/">instagram</a>, that egg carton may look familiar, as i couldn't resist a pre-christmas sneak peak (i don't think my nephew is on instagram yet, so i didn't have to worry about spoilers). i found the plain cardboard cartons at hobby lobby and then drew the design on with a marker (don't be too impressed, it's not free-handed...i first mocked it up on the computer and then transferred it over in pencil with carbon paper...i'm not that good...)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3hG4s_S4mkIeWZueh5rWVZVfsZBAwbs8hQwWMuCf9YyuBp0Utn1pbsFEkHMC5zY_9c2u_5i1L3_NcLJoO0MwzrXanFDR39bV0D-teRcaHZW_iGC38CcF4R8TOnLMDibYT-MRAxF77XMA/s1600/felt_breakfast_food_4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="466" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3hG4s_S4mkIeWZueh5rWVZVfsZBAwbs8hQwWMuCf9YyuBp0Utn1pbsFEkHMC5zY_9c2u_5i1L3_NcLJoO0MwzrXanFDR39bV0D-teRcaHZW_iGC38CcF4R8TOnLMDibYT-MRAxF77XMA/s640/felt_breakfast_food_4.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
i debated for a while what to put in the carton. felt eggs? plastic easter eggs? but then i finally settled on another household favorite, <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/kitty-mc-nuggets">kitty mcnuggets</a>. they just fit so perfectly in an egg carton, i couldn't resist. and margot really loves <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/8Oh3FNtRAj/?taken-by=libby.m.sharp">hers</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8sTEfWOeOIj1oIuaw6jjp7QzAxb-IjcBbltZhX4zexI8K9qUz3y1PPT4voAlLrCHwSfhbd4ZjipHBjBVwmLGcJ6rne1_-HMbWdhd3Cym4YfWo5mO21HecOPnKk8_CCjfe8MdOiOXO6xs/s1600/felt_breakfast_food_5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="524" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8sTEfWOeOIj1oIuaw6jjp7QzAxb-IjcBbltZhX4zexI8K9qUz3y1PPT4voAlLrCHwSfhbd4ZjipHBjBVwmLGcJ6rne1_-HMbWdhd3Cym4YfWo5mO21HecOPnKk8_CCjfe8MdOiOXO6xs/s640/felt_breakfast_food_5.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
and there you have it. enough christmas food for a two year old to play short order cook. which will you be having? i'm thinking those bacon and eggs look pretty good right about now.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWoXrMdqF6DsIYz8wNnckodM5Mf7UTV1lIOnyn5m4vMrABv0nnE4NT0-7_tBX11ygaXOIoOvqwnu8jmbK_vaMHMNzYSWqIkVG5cFd1m38EmTG4NK1uE3XD-EizuSjxaF8B8xwV4hK-Rtw/s1600/felt_breakfast_food_in_a_row.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWoXrMdqF6DsIYz8wNnckodM5Mf7UTV1lIOnyn5m4vMrABv0nnE4NT0-7_tBX11ygaXOIoOvqwnu8jmbK_vaMHMNzYSWqIkVG5cFd1m38EmTG4NK1uE3XD-EizuSjxaF8B8xwV4hK-Rtw/s640/felt_breakfast_food_in_a_row.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
so what about you, did you accomplish any of your handmade goals this christmas? or are you still spinning in pinterest overload, looking to the new year for a refresh?<br />
<br />libbyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06286438360185176313noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8134524590556392582.post-54513633424328340112015-12-21T08:25:00.000-05:002016-12-22T10:11:57.753-05:00printable christmas gift tags.i'm a habitual christmas procrastinator. not when it comes to things like decking the halls, or making cookies, or drinking hot cocoa by the fire, or watching elf fifteen times, but definitely when it comes to buying and wrapping presents.<br />
<br />
so here i am, several days (i'm not even going to count) before christmas, just starting my wrapping and with several gifts still yet to buy. i would hereby resolve to do better next year, but really, that's just a ridiculous notion. so rather, i will share with you, my fellow procrastinators, some fun and free gift tag printables.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUtmxLrZeKowNVcY2d6YCPrmTlLwDl282IEJIJ2WtM3fHeqSM5fUwXtMyZQ7PRU_YlPERPblUsxwWlf3JUf1nFYbnif8pSXUj-CzG0LkVktzHHTdzCMou7UteOkfiCNnhglbCNnmJ0KSU/s1600/christmas_tag_printables.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="508" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUtmxLrZeKowNVcY2d6YCPrmTlLwDl282IEJIJ2WtM3fHeqSM5fUwXtMyZQ7PRU_YlPERPblUsxwWlf3JUf1nFYbnif8pSXUj-CzG0LkVktzHHTdzCMou7UteOkfiCNnhglbCNnmJ0KSU/s640/christmas_tag_printables.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
because this seems to be the year of printing things off.<br />
<br />
if you checked out my <a href="http://hopingforrocketships.blogspot.com/2015/11/diy-advent-calendar.html">advent calendar</a>, these patterns may seem familiar. and this probably isn't the last you'll see of them...the black and white patterns are just so fun. i also added some hand lettering to the mix. because there are far too few opportunities in life to practice your cursive.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihiGAzPVF6epkMIJj_qwKhD1F9zhqSs237W5o7_S-nugPZ0N1Qn2NvBLyVoNCzORHZERvB-fZjU9xjqV3bi1IvKrD4ayvKXmJrLomwbjhMUal-wV9hAmLWXscGmgGTl4eZL42T87rnMLY/s1600/christmas_tag_printables_7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="484" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihiGAzPVF6epkMIJj_qwKhD1F9zhqSs237W5o7_S-nugPZ0N1Qn2NvBLyVoNCzORHZERvB-fZjU9xjqV3bi1IvKrD4ayvKXmJrLomwbjhMUal-wV9hAmLWXscGmgGTl4eZL42T87rnMLY/s640/christmas_tag_printables_7.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
you can get the file <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B1eo7dLlKc0FQXF3eDZHX0Rsd3M/view?usp=sharing">here</a>. just print it off (landscape style), cut them out, punch some holes and use them to bring a little cheer to your holiday packages.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJouUE3O5qmNjn6rmgqRbExN3bi2VoZTVruNHbBZYU51wytDOsWc04lefkLOHMAoN_au8GB2Y2Qpo4158p_229U3YLdtrCp-2xOA6e7pnXyXPUKsVkEoXXZCpcK11g64ntKsoWESPXhPo/s1600/christmas_tag_printables_6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="500" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJouUE3O5qmNjn6rmgqRbExN3bi2VoZTVruNHbBZYU51wytDOsWc04lefkLOHMAoN_au8GB2Y2Qpo4158p_229U3YLdtrCp-2xOA6e7pnXyXPUKsVkEoXXZCpcK11g64ntKsoWESPXhPo/s640/christmas_tag_printables_6.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
i think they're pretty swell. especially paired with bakers twine, black and white ribbon or some chunky yarn. and if you're not a holiday procrastinator (lucky), you can use them for whatever your next gift giving occasion is, since they're pretty neutral. if you do use them, post a link in the comments. i'd love to see them!<br />
<br />libbyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06286438360185176313noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8134524590556392582.post-32840387019322715752015-12-13T15:36:00.002-05:002015-12-13T15:42:05.620-05:00merry and happy banner.ever since i shipped off the <a href="http://hopingforrocketships.blogspot.com/2015/11/diy-advent-calendar.html">advent calendar</a>, my mantel has been looking rather lonely. and since i cannot seem to settle on stockings to hang up by the chimney with care, i needed something quick, cheap and cheerful to fill the void.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjz_YXLcycmrZV-x63hDo6a1P34lkxgJM9OCHmnq5j8b_HQ4Q7BsmFpbXS7fpqF23qz_zZgc50HUj5SDToh9RQYPoorWCXQNwzwqKyvpRZh2wjj9YcyZ8fcgt7oCklMZRq7z8P7xdnFYHk/s1600/merry_and_happy_banner_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="438" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjz_YXLcycmrZV-x63hDo6a1P34lkxgJM9OCHmnq5j8b_HQ4Q7BsmFpbXS7fpqF23qz_zZgc50HUj5SDToh9RQYPoorWCXQNwzwqKyvpRZh2wjj9YcyZ8fcgt7oCklMZRq7z8P7xdnFYHk/s640/merry_and_happy_banner_1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
so i made a banner, with bright colors and a fun sentiment. who doesn't need the occasional holiday reminder to be merry and happy?</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIA-MBMsv4omsf5p3WQAlbLlcPCMiLk88MQRxu8xW66NpOWVKu_Sgw6-ZTwpdUW9AjpDC8a-Df-PShOmE9F5u3tXr_xyjFUXqLRA90PWu5m-X_Il5Bzkyk9u18FR63HgcSm5pcM4iDKFY/s1600/merry_and_happy_banner_2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="418" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIA-MBMsv4omsf5p3WQAlbLlcPCMiLk88MQRxu8xW66NpOWVKu_Sgw6-ZTwpdUW9AjpDC8a-Df-PShOmE9F5u3tXr_xyjFUXqLRA90PWu5m-X_Il5Bzkyk9u18FR63HgcSm5pcM4iDKFY/s640/merry_and_happy_banner_2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
the design was done in inkscape and i printed the letters two to a page on some heavier card stock. after a couple of sitcoms spent carefully cutting and hole punching, volia, no more naked mantel!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEii-looCaTIlL50eg5Srg-s5NhOo_QrYbOy-qafO0EMZNI-IC5PqeXPx0NcBOScKI4q1IpBWJEH_g4JyIZSkmDCEIEHeGGXpaqcgGO9jl_H3WVeQgbu6-LeOAXj03_YbK0rDW8A0BPvEBY/s1600/merry_and_happy_banner_3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="522" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEii-looCaTIlL50eg5Srg-s5NhOo_QrYbOy-qafO0EMZNI-IC5PqeXPx0NcBOScKI4q1IpBWJEH_g4JyIZSkmDCEIEHeGGXpaqcgGO9jl_H3WVeQgbu6-LeOAXj03_YbK0rDW8A0BPvEBY/s640/merry_and_happy_banner_3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
i've been really digging a colorful christmas this year. if you are too, you can grab the <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B1eo7dLlKc0FOUJtYkUxQ003clU/view?usp=sharing">free printables</a> and make your very own merry and happy banner (be sure to print the file landscape style). hang it above your fireplace or over a doorway or along the wall. anywhere that you need a little more holiday cheer.</div>

it's a super cool project with templates from <a href="http://mrprintables.com/christmas-tree-doll-house.html">mr. printables</a> (check out the whole site. there are lots of neat things there). and the best part is, it's essentially free, because who doesn't have a spare cardboard box (or fifty) sitting around the house right about now.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYy09X19XRcowdmmV8IsxgHiAx5R0L1WjkPNPuLOStKPecF35DlfoyF78vrCxf4Ypt83YaYJyMJbXjBFp0aw9L5q01UN9WuG5JRv2xS1up7zK2u2RiqRWLWt1U225XprRliWpnRLbxmqk/s1600/card_board_christmas_tree_4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYy09X19XRcowdmmV8IsxgHiAx5R0L1WjkPNPuLOStKPecF35DlfoyF78vrCxf4Ypt83YaYJyMJbXjBFp0aw9L5q01UN9WuG5JRv2xS1up7zK2u2RiqRWLWt1U225XprRliWpnRLbxmqk/s640/card_board_christmas_tree_4.jpg" width="472" /></a></div>
<br />
it's also fairly quick, depending on how much customization you want to do. i chose to paint the various panels with some acrylic craft paint that i had on hand. this was accomplished during a margot and mom painting session, which actually was super fun and minimally messy (she's quite the <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/-zgF4wtRJ0/?taken-by=libby.m.sharp">painter</a>).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdCWhc0j4CpYvuonQs1NUHHWR5dP96azShrYYDbtW-k0MM6k1PmSn-kkcNM2c5BdxVdcjrq9hOA5f5E85lbt_qOq2JiNz8P5I3bIR7RIKxid7oNZIHIP75x_UlDsHGytfahiGNTCUQFi4/s1600/card_board_christmas_tree_5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdCWhc0j4CpYvuonQs1NUHHWR5dP96azShrYYDbtW-k0MM6k1PmSn-kkcNM2c5BdxVdcjrq9hOA5f5E85lbt_qOq2JiNz8P5I3bIR7RIKxid7oNZIHIP75x_UlDsHGytfahiGNTCUQFi4/s640/card_board_christmas_tree_5.jpg" width="462" /></a></div>
<br />
i also used some gold foil tape to stripe the floors, and maybe ran out on the bottom floor...if only i could remember where i bought it... i'm also considering using a sharpie (white mayhaps) to add some fun designs to the walls. hmmmm<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
*i really love this picture, because it makes margot look like a giant...</div>
<br />
margot seems to think it's pretty cool. she mostly likes putting the kitties through the doors.<br />
<br />
so, you should make one too! i'm pretty sure ours will stick around long after christmastime. as long as the masking tape holds and margot doesn't decide that it's climbable...as it most definitely is not. libbyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06286438360185176313noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8134524590556392582.post-75932635027849918762015-11-27T10:12:00.001-05:002022-12-06T12:53:04.132-05:00diy advent calendar.happy day after thanksgiving! the official start (in my house at least) of the christmas season. and what's a better way to recover from that breakfast pumpkin pie than an afternoon of crafting on the couch. and so, to encourage just that, here's a snazzy advent calendar diy, complete with printables, for all of your couch crafting fun.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-5IJs1Q6m7zr-SnGMGYT8fZW39p0tpqb4SzqeaO8jZ1EhbI2PJezKyXMC4921HWMRed_Qnf1MJPIKTuX4lNtdaJOBI5jMqRN4PJ2cjl-a-9mczR-yHDmEtxdz5_TUM_VEcvf_mRe6iYM/s1600/advent_garland_1.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-5IJs1Q6m7zr-SnGMGYT8fZW39p0tpqb4SzqeaO8jZ1EhbI2PJezKyXMC4921HWMRed_Qnf1MJPIKTuX4lNtdaJOBI5jMqRN4PJ2cjl-a-9mczR-yHDmEtxdz5_TUM_VEcvf_mRe6iYM/s640/advent_garland_1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
i love christmastime. i love having a living tree in the house (and fending off cats and toddlers). i love sipping hot chocolate with peppermint. i love roaring fires and cheesy music and endless cookies and cakes shaped like logs. as much as i love christmastime though, i'm not such a huge fan of christmas. i think it overwhelms me. with all the stress of giving presents and getting presents, all of the goodnesses of the season gets briefly lost in the frenzied day. last year, though, i think i struck on a happy balance. a way to embrace all of the awesomeness that is christmastime and minimize the stress of presenting while still having fun things to open.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHp3QtRFn7jMS9huJmDc4SZd5Gxy-syYCtf9i9v_ai1cedrG3BDofYrWf_wFw8894ap3N2kd8O34I9py80ZBLQjSkIi73hXC6Ffr7C8Wiclf5SeFDfakA1W-AKIlmTG9WbO7_89TXLB8s/s1600/advent_garland_2.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="432" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHp3QtRFn7jMS9huJmDc4SZd5Gxy-syYCtf9i9v_ai1cedrG3BDofYrWf_wFw8894ap3N2kd8O34I9py80ZBLQjSkIi73hXC6Ffr7C8Wiclf5SeFDfakA1W-AKIlmTG9WbO7_89TXLB8s/s640/advent_garland_2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
advent. a full month of intentional christmastiming. last year i sent my sister lilly a random assortment of advent gifts (only a few of which <a href="http://hopingforrocketships.blogspot.com/2015/01/hot-chocolate.html">got</a> <a href="http://hopingforrocketships.blogspot.com/2015/01/hot-chocolate.html">blogged</a>) and had a total blast collecting them all, wrapping them up, and shipping them out. so this year, my sisters and sisters-in-laws decided (i.e. agreed to go along with my crazy plan) to do an advent calendar swap--each person would make their own advent calendar, and then we'd exchanged them randomly. this is my contribution to the mix.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYIHI9vUFNaKCQhjxwm-2hEV9gOF9NzNgcVB7jdU2AnPu5S5GPdGrhjtDA0WuNR6FHRGmhP_ynodQac9o4JmFQ3LYcF6Pi3qhvwCHWVn9qZSyBVIHzrEnwKDbE7UHwt27mBHOObeUCyLI/s1600/advent_garland_3.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYIHI9vUFNaKCQhjxwm-2hEV9gOF9NzNgcVB7jdU2AnPu5S5GPdGrhjtDA0WuNR6FHRGmhP_ynodQac9o4JmFQ3LYcF6Pi3qhvwCHWVn9qZSyBVIHzrEnwKDbE7UHwt27mBHOObeUCyLI/s640/advent_garland_3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
i was totally inspired by this <a href="http://www.pourmesjolismomes.com/2013/11/larbre-berlingots-calendrier-de-lavent.html">one</a> that i saw on <a href="http://www.pourmesjolismomes.com/">pour mes jolis m<span style="background-color: white; color: #191919; line-height: 23px;"><span style="color: #bf9000; font-family: inherit;">ô</span></span><span style="font-family: inherit;">m</span>es</a>. i loved its modern look with the black and white, its use of washi tape (seriously, can there be too much?) and most importantly, its ability to hold candy (and maybe also the way they look like those ice pops from the elementary school cafeteria...). i've been making some simple hand drawn patterns for a while now, and i figured this was the perfect opportunity to finally make vector graphics from them. so i took the same premise and made twenty four of my own black and white designs. and i'm completely in love.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgN-u3z2LtxdLmVC0KUECZGQMJV_B6dvKmcb4TaSfjSOprn0Vi3U80hsk5DUfV3_F3jWlO4460E7x-fnGCr7esGDqITxI8fnoUVnUgc0nestz12zbnDGv_Nd72DfqgAhTTYAmJEKNHyrX4/s1600/advent_garland_4.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgN-u3z2LtxdLmVC0KUECZGQMJV_B6dvKmcb4TaSfjSOprn0Vi3U80hsk5DUfV3_F3jWlO4460E7x-fnGCr7esGDqITxI8fnoUVnUgc0nestz12zbnDGv_Nd72DfqgAhTTYAmJEKNHyrX4/s640/advent_garland_4.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
and a little sad that it's already left my house. but stoked that it's being hung up in an awesome house in south carolina. and since i made printables, i can make them over and over again. and so can you! just click <a href="https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B1eo7dLlKc0Fa2xhSHJWZzVrczA?resourcekey=0-SFMLC6H0TFxDQ5NGu-q0NQ&usp=sharing">here</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLlybgcCx6t_3HTiAbJSvZ0pR2ZPud5P40iBOCN5AIDOPR6dGtecytq2MOQ6lUqK9DkYI71XAfSah9vy2qgG9aQ5DDbmq1nH4x5oV345gqVcGe-n8Ybyx2e3dmdjQAx3mf-_mGfZhRKx8/s1600/advent_garland_5.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLlybgcCx6t_3HTiAbJSvZ0pR2ZPud5P40iBOCN5AIDOPR6dGtecytq2MOQ6lUqK9DkYI71XAfSah9vy2qgG9aQ5DDbmq1nH4x5oV345gqVcGe-n8Ybyx2e3dmdjQAx3mf-_mGfZhRKx8/s640/advent_garland_5.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
in addition to the twenty four pouches, i also made small cards with scriptures on them and cards with suggested festive activities, one each for each of the twenty four days. rather than reinvent the wheel, you can find awesome assembly instructions over at <a href="http://www.pourmesjolismomes.com/2013/11/larbre-berlingots-calendrier-de-lavent.html">pour mes jolis m<span style="background-color: white; color: #191919; line-height: 23px;"><span style="color: #bf9000; font-family: inherit;">ô</span></span><span style="font-family: inherit;">m</span>es</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkInwYfBZX-S9NCutLy9eILa0rOZQI-V2cWeRQjmobs4rnWKjmzprtccjC9LldTqQcLXBLKmCzX-MCr0PefSgiPhBk7EP8NnvWulv1Vrly5l-sjfAsM-jDW0qkRvAtH-1TqDHmPUgsB7g/s1600/advent_garland_6.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkInwYfBZX-S9NCutLy9eILa0rOZQI-V2cWeRQjmobs4rnWKjmzprtccjC9LldTqQcLXBLKmCzX-MCr0PefSgiPhBk7EP8NnvWulv1Vrly5l-sjfAsM-jDW0qkRvAtH-1TqDHmPUgsB7g/s640/advent_garland_6.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
i chose to make mine into a garland, so i wasn't able to hang them by the string in the corner (they don't all face outwards that way...which i found out the hard way...). tiny clothespins worked perfectly, though, even with the weight of a couple of pieces of candy.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXmYASZvYCv_tef2eGH1U_RLjxLGJC5PeW28ZJBs3d7bIgSiqDXZexLjA09OaosLeilgZ4_ffdMb7CWp-Hjps6oWT2ldAbH2ueFR-6qFK-jvXnYGZ68LCRUSjx1weXM4oA81uxUlQlAgY/s1600/advent_garland_7.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXmYASZvYCv_tef2eGH1U_RLjxLGJC5PeW28ZJBs3d7bIgSiqDXZexLjA09OaosLeilgZ4_ffdMb7CWp-Hjps6oWT2ldAbH2ueFR-6qFK-jvXnYGZ68LCRUSjx1weXM4oA81uxUlQlAgY/s640/advent_garland_7.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
so you should make some! and keep them for yourself or give them to a friend or to a neighbor or to someone completely random. and then hang them up over the fireplace, with a yak. or throw them in a basket. or hide them all over the house, easter egg style.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQmMcFXv0On43FSb_IYFZgLOyMlndZ1X5riJHxacJu5HTX9STmnlVcAR_uZoB7cj10AX9X9MpmnfYYYm30jAR_GConD6eRijlkB8d-BZP27BDCDCG4u7CacBfx2euLj4hozkINE49bADI/s1600/advent_garland_9.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="432" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQmMcFXv0On43FSb_IYFZgLOyMlndZ1X5riJHxacJu5HTX9STmnlVcAR_uZoB7cj10AX9X9MpmnfYYYm30jAR_GConD6eRijlkB8d-BZP27BDCDCG4u7CacBfx2euLj4hozkINE49bADI/s640/advent_garland_9.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
and since the pouches aren't too christmas specific, they can be used for other occasions--like twenty four days of birthdaying or twenty four days of summer or twenty four days of just because! </div>
<div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlWKWAilchHRoxZYa5LI5O7pJMtJHExX3utfbbfYxncOdanWVg1PIuh56D9OC07jNkWVmBevv2ehvL4WL_Lb6B0x78zzqxfLO7novJW5vwNnm47z0YlvhHjpdOIrP1WE8B0Tp8wL34Ej8/s1600/advent_garland_8.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlWKWAilchHRoxZYa5LI5O7pJMtJHExX3utfbbfYxncOdanWVg1PIuh56D9OC07jNkWVmBevv2ehvL4WL_Lb6B0x78zzqxfLO7novJW5vwNnm47z0YlvhHjpdOIrP1WE8B0Tp8wL34Ej8/s640/advent_garland_8.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
on a somewhat related note, if you do choose to fill them with chocolate, hanging them above an often used fireplace is probably not ideal. just saying.<br />
<br />
happy christmastime!</div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsPHTSjtnWNr8JvmXwsEsgHeH_eeNxcIbSgX-oR_snf09LjmiEbsf32wEwkB-e2GvCd4twT6gNAXgUwjIOHzmkJabm4182yeJ6rcNjKAQOezX0Nx_gVspe5b4Y9yjqVi6MEI0NTM7J4pk/s1600/pajama_pants1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsPHTSjtnWNr8JvmXwsEsgHeH_eeNxcIbSgX-oR_snf09LjmiEbsf32wEwkB-e2GvCd4twT6gNAXgUwjIOHzmkJabm4182yeJ6rcNjKAQOezX0Nx_gVspe5b4Y9yjqVi6MEI0NTM7J4pk/s640/pajama_pants1.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
i apologize in advance for all of the blurry pictures you're about to see. the only way to convince a toddler to model pajama pants is to let them jump on your bed.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgh9A2dbHjjDBSJyyLc__dXj7Rb4RlkEFvcRO4Lcl2XrPOar8T1QcO4Dqk4ZJJ6YohLFfWTxRsd5yN1shS0RjnH_0xV-EuoruugynI3r6aovS_2v7YWm7bC-nKzKllSKXy_Cw6nCLmT-t8/s1600/pajama_pants4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgh9A2dbHjjDBSJyyLc__dXj7Rb4RlkEFvcRO4Lcl2XrPOar8T1QcO4Dqk4ZJJ6YohLFfWTxRsd5yN1shS0RjnH_0xV-EuoruugynI3r6aovS_2v7YWm7bC-nKzKllSKXy_Cw6nCLmT-t8/s640/pajama_pants4.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
i made these by just adding length to dana's <a href="http://www.danamadeit.com/2013/06/new-pattern-kid-shorts-are-here.html">kids shorts</a> pattern , which continues to proove to be a great investment. pajama pants are forgiving enough that i could easily have self drafted a pattern, but i already had the pattern pieces on hand. a win for laziness.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoihPDUQBcom0TzzORsttpuZNmgVMZExQR0baTWqxAIJccjaFQFhyAa9mn8ZhEbkBL2pcimfEyeoQFcsUyukd9upi9oWm32VZdlOp3Y-999NIWEPT24qakH0ci42bpV1DurGSnM5nZ8YM/s1600/pajama_pants5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoihPDUQBcom0TzzORsttpuZNmgVMZExQR0baTWqxAIJccjaFQFhyAa9mn8ZhEbkBL2pcimfEyeoQFcsUyukd9upi9oWm32VZdlOp3Y-999NIWEPT24qakH0ci42bpV1DurGSnM5nZ8YM/s640/pajama_pants5.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
i used the pattern option for the full elastic waistband and added a draw string, more for looks than functionality. pajama pants were made for drawstrings.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhA7ttKVpIJ79Z3qMrxyQi_PvntS15vf83tsqKb6T4r_WjihEbPMDBzOmH78e5gw3xQJiaapTBDcMs-K7Ky4fNUbtTcvr6yMq73SDx7_GbzDLLjWhI9X9eclkZnk60nY_axn_D_Y4bL7aA/s1600/pajama_pants3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhA7ttKVpIJ79Z3qMrxyQi_PvntS15vf83tsqKb6T4r_WjihEbPMDBzOmH78e5gw3xQJiaapTBDcMs-K7Ky4fNUbtTcvr6yMq73SDx7_GbzDLLjWhI9X9eclkZnk60nY_axn_D_Y4bL7aA/s640/pajama_pants3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
these were super quick make. under an hour from cutting to complete, and that included having to redo the button holes for the draw string when i realized i put them in the back originally...</div>

i'm really loving this woodland flannel. it's from jo ann's (which is open again here...yay!!). ever since finishing these i've been pretty jealous of margot. soon, i'll probably break down and make me a pair, so we can have matching mommy-daughter pajama parties.</div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjob4ZWb40GsFFzrKbOLu9xPORcjz5HQiMVNXi5AkSmtjWF14IDj-vZ7T-Sio8S6NQMr5LEXM-PZG_6VlUFM9Gd3hgf1JvMvSGoLILwH6wullhqZEfLr5Vzn5LENylracKZmSQTyfPMgy4/s1600/felt_foods.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjob4ZWb40GsFFzrKbOLu9xPORcjz5HQiMVNXi5AkSmtjWF14IDj-vZ7T-Sio8S6NQMr5LEXM-PZG_6VlUFM9Gd3hgf1JvMvSGoLILwH6wullhqZEfLr5Vzn5LENylracKZmSQTyfPMgy4/s640/felt_foods.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
like donuts! sprinkle donuts are margot's favorite (and every other two year old). she likes to eat them from the top down, meaning she only eats the frosting and the sprinkles. sometimes she accidentally eats some of the donut. these felt donuts are a bit hard to eat, but super cute to look at. and perfect for tea parties. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTaAPEpkTf4ZGfXMXwTGtvEPg9Np0Z2OEXYshJp0hc4_ZPfkuwq3tquHg4EZyN3QMmOCscwY2aM2ASCAvSfUIGT9umsz3w_C5zwMLmxYVwERPncZc1j4BUFLbNs_pT2pHXXoKU-K0pyrw/s1600/felt_donuts_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTaAPEpkTf4ZGfXMXwTGtvEPg9Np0Z2OEXYshJp0hc4_ZPfkuwq3tquHg4EZyN3QMmOCscwY2aM2ASCAvSfUIGT9umsz3w_C5zwMLmxYVwERPncZc1j4BUFLbNs_pT2pHXXoKU-K0pyrw/s640/felt_donuts_1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
margot is also a big fan of pizza. when she says it, though, it sounds like 'pasta', which is really confusing. confusing because i never know if she's asking for pizza or spaghetti and also confusing because she used to say 'pizza'. not sure what happened there...</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEho-8Km9I_380-5FD8cTTdQhAxBJU8pkWLQSMTXJZwXsvYbFjJFtSpONX72NdImMbgdS7HZLjPESlv3TPfq-ChnXCbMpZ6oJupAOk8FXFSygyV7I1w981I_wGuQ4sB0kddIjE_Nwv8UU3E/s1600/felt_pizza_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEho-8Km9I_380-5FD8cTTdQhAxBJU8pkWLQSMTXJZwXsvYbFjJFtSpONX72NdImMbgdS7HZLjPESlv3TPfq-ChnXCbMpZ6oJupAOk8FXFSygyV7I1w981I_wGuQ4sB0kddIjE_Nwv8UU3E/s640/felt_pizza_1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
the best thing about <a href="http://www.andersruff.com/custom-printable-parties/diy/ruff-draft-diy-felt-pizza/">this felt pizza</a> is that it is disassemble-able...so that margot can make and re-make her pizza over and over again. this is a particularly entertaining activity on friday evenings when we're waiting for the pizza man. then she goes and puts it in her oven, where it seems to only take fifteen seconds to cook. the magic of felt food. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiarX9B_nI8uLuB3z3EmluOo8TgU3E55UNvUuMoVlSsFS-X4VPLXyb7slwJXvEkbBFmZClIItDo35P2qn70sjXJ6GzB6qb8peKgbclTgLnB-kaThhzGEb-J2xtSCoG6u4Cj2eK2q6q-9vA/s1600/felt_pizza_2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="362" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiarX9B_nI8uLuB3z3EmluOo8TgU3E55UNvUuMoVlSsFS-X4VPLXyb7slwJXvEkbBFmZClIItDo35P2qn70sjXJ6GzB6qb8peKgbclTgLnB-kaThhzGEb-J2xtSCoG6u4Cj2eK2q6q-9vA/s640/felt_pizza_2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
these farfalle may be my favorite! so cute and so similar to the real thing. and the three color blend really makes them look awesome (and speaks to my new habit of hoarding all of the various shades of felt from all of the craft stores).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvvbMPzVuZK8ukEk3NmQokytMMS6h6EGeyJ1kSWoR5lwpBq8noNJkYqz-ONpzCOPUFsJqiA5aLR-pCWGhF-Qz88UKWvNQY-3UBuKDrj2ov2AUo1Dx0TA5CK_xEdpcih8KCuqQFtfQqW1E/s1600/felt_pasta_3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvvbMPzVuZK8ukEk3NmQokytMMS6h6EGeyJ1kSWoR5lwpBq8noNJkYqz-ONpzCOPUFsJqiA5aLR-pCWGhF-Qz88UKWvNQY-3UBuKDrj2ov2AUo1Dx0TA5CK_xEdpcih8KCuqQFtfQqW1E/s640/felt_pasta_3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
making these is super simple, as long as you have pinking shears. i suppose you could make them with straight ends, but it wouldn't be nearly as cute. the first set i made (the off-white ones) i sewed on my machine, which was fast, but made it a bit hard to keep them lookin neat. for the other two sets, i simply hand stitched them while watching tv one evening. five or six quick stitches is all it takes for these adorable little bow ties.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_z1Dg1wvXX_IGl5n6VRWByXeX-bCA4qTc0Z1IuZTsKhU1tk1s1d7J185KVjKHtpsTk_GuiowdDoWVdiBHAYeBvSljJaYQCWY6e87GfMxG6HjjbJLzkXb1MejrUeXuSgH7B8RpmPjiO0c/s1600/felt_pasta_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_z1Dg1wvXX_IGl5n6VRWByXeX-bCA4qTc0Z1IuZTsKhU1tk1s1d7J185KVjKHtpsTk_GuiowdDoWVdiBHAYeBvSljJaYQCWY6e87GfMxG6HjjbJLzkXb1MejrUeXuSgH7B8RpmPjiO0c/s640/felt_pasta_1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
and margot has a blast playing with them. they go from being stirred in the pot on the stove (with large chunks of wooden butter, of course), drained in the colander in the sink and then back to the stove. luckily, you cannot over cook felt pastas.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPSKJSSA72CZHHIHTSDC8ZABekCNdusmLSG0N5B5eBDy2jcVFKx05axJsj5FP_Vce-Yfq1ZV5QuWZVqIZpP6IJkbbpK3R7hTqx8qTGji_SELEEekaCe1sXoaI7gL2reokQkG-kEMIIV0s/s1600/felt_pasta_2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="552" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPSKJSSA72CZHHIHTSDC8ZABekCNdusmLSG0N5B5eBDy2jcVFKx05axJsj5FP_Vce-Yfq1ZV5QuWZVqIZpP6IJkbbpK3R7hTqx8qTGji_SELEEekaCe1sXoaI7gL2reokQkG-kEMIIV0s/s640/felt_pasta_2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
and that about brings this blog up to speed with my felt food endeavors. still on my list are more things that can serve as salad or pizza toppings, like mushrooms, peppers, onions, and the like. <br />

*disclaimer. upon close examination, these photos contain much kitty hair. luckily, this is not real food. consider yourself warned.<br />

or more accurately, some lettuce and a few tomato slices. this salad could use some cucumber, peppers, onions and maybe some hard boiled eggs. alas, long grows the list of completely unnecessary things that i feel inexplicable compelled to do...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmZJCpKl_QChYKGmENi0YSGu71qg0lddkyBGZbae8CIUL5kEVJE9MLokAXedfpvpH9m1chH7QvevRIUpEazUZAzLI_BzCR67b3NCZ8xhrqG7b4oUGjvAJk_P6_RGzCLSFBcoBqc7c34pk/s1600/felt_vegetables_3_lettuce.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="466" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmZJCpKl_QChYKGmENi0YSGu71qg0lddkyBGZbae8CIUL5kEVJE9MLokAXedfpvpH9m1chH7QvevRIUpEazUZAzLI_BzCR67b3NCZ8xhrqG7b4oUGjvAJk_P6_RGzCLSFBcoBqc7c34pk/s640/felt_vegetables_3_lettuce.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
the lettuce may be my favorite of the vegetables (as well as my nemesis, because i'm constantly finding it all over the house). to make it, i googled various lettuce/leaf shapes and made a template in inkscape (available <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B1eo7dLlKc0FNE1pb2U1V05aMFE/view?usp=sharing&resourcekey=0-rGuJD8ehVfVKnsHEcymn0w">here</a>, if you want to make your own). i then spent one tv watching evening cutting the shapes out from two different shades of green felt. i could easily have stopped there and had perfectly play-with-able lettuce, but that's not how i roll. i also added veins and ribbing using my sewing machine. it really adds a great dimensionality to it. i think i have more fun making it then margot has playing with it...<br />
<br />

<br />
then came a series of root vegetables. the construction of these was very similar to the strawberries, except that the leaves were sewn into the opening at the top rather than over it. for the radishes, i loosely followed <a href="http://familleringeval.canalblog.com/archives/2010/01/18/16564883.html">these instructions</a>. to make them different sizes though, i cut the finished circle into somewhat randomly sized sectors, anywhere from one half to one third of the circle. for the carrots, i just free hand cut large triangles, trying to vary the length and width. in spite of this though, the finished carrots all ended up roughly the same size...but at least they're different <a href="https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/80/37/35/803735e184edc75fafbff6f495466881.jpg">colors</a>! <br />

<br />
so there you have it. it all makes me happy. and probably keeps margot vaguely amused. <br />
<br />
if you're worried that all of my felt food endeavors will be this wholesome, don't be. still in my to be blogged about queue are donuts, a pizza and pasta (hooray starches!). <br />
<br />
so what should be next? <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/pink_lemo_nade/5575751265/in/pool-60164570@N00/">sandwiches</a>? <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/174708450/felt-food-pancakes-syrup-pancake?ref=shop_home_active">pancakes</a>? <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/190857285/felt-pretend-play-food-roast">pot roast</a>!?!libbyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06286438360185176313noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8134524590556392582.post-1737938384636287532015-09-27T11:26:00.000-04:002015-09-27T11:30:12.987-04:00chunky knit hat.yesterday was a rainy, chilly and dreary saturday. the kind where you don't want to leave the house and end up drinking an excessive amount of tea and coffee and watching way too much parks and rec on netflix. probably one of my favorite kinds of saturdays.<br />
<br />
it was also the kind of late september saturday that creates in me an irresistible desire to knit something. so i did.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

an awesome split brim hat with a ridiculously over-sized pom pom and a touch of fair isle. free pattern courtesy of <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/split-brim-toddler-hat">sheepy shenanigans</a> on ravelry.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFrN1TbpRZjN0CAKGIrzPms8dJ9B2VqUcxQOoKkXrHT3ypbTrexhXOuqriBf64jlAJ1W7XnYgkpjxVltQDBhYwY6SuiM_SVwldxdz691FrPXeBrEZAQo4QE4nOSEZzyBOYdhaxR2WjSno/s1600/chunky_knit_hat_3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="510" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFrN1TbpRZjN0CAKGIrzPms8dJ9B2VqUcxQOoKkXrHT3ypbTrexhXOuqriBf64jlAJ1W7XnYgkpjxVltQDBhYwY6SuiM_SVwldxdz691FrPXeBrEZAQo4QE4nOSEZzyBOYdhaxR2WjSno/s640/chunky_knit_hat_3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
because every toddler needs an absurd hat.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgllLcPvvvjNuSnUHV-TTALYy0GO5hPh1fsnYYWmbOK-jJKSSYXz-nGOX9QqN5BgTXWYTZNlNEg1_DleRCv4IUQgGC1b-LGAbW4f8TtZTEUpnoLuFyBUQS40la9i4wxGv-XVyrwnK2C9Ow/s1600/chunky_knit_hat_4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="496" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgllLcPvvvjNuSnUHV-TTALYy0GO5hPh1fsnYYWmbOK-jJKSSYXz-nGOX9QqN5BgTXWYTZNlNEg1_DleRCv4IUQgGC1b-LGAbW4f8TtZTEUpnoLuFyBUQS40la9i4wxGv-XVyrwnK2C9Ow/s640/chunky_knit_hat_4.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
and the best part was, i was able to knit it up in a nap time. a huge win in my book. especially because knitting projects, once set a side, seem to get sucked into an alternate universe, never to be seen again. but not this one! so much cuteness!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCJe8zaILLaH9GIecmyb8Zb-J37-heQdw8hdsjSrQsjTIQZajeG6ikGHdtrTQ0N1thLsncVjLz3WZwPEzJr7BPcCAEKWsYXABYM93aLhSqLI8POfR6msadm3PGZZUUJtMy_VSps58zjO4/s1600/chunky_knit_hat_2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="560" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCJe8zaILLaH9GIecmyb8Zb-J37-heQdw8hdsjSrQsjTIQZajeG6ikGHdtrTQ0N1thLsncVjLz3WZwPEzJr7BPcCAEKWsYXABYM93aLhSqLI8POfR6msadm3PGZZUUJtMy_VSps58zjO4/s640/chunky_knit_hat_2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
the hat is a big snug, but that's because i used siz eleven rather than thirteen needles (what i had on hand) and forgot to add stitches circumferentially. alas.<br />
<br />
i made up the fair isle pattern fairly quickly, going for an ombre-ish effect, where the cream gradually changed to the yellow. it worked out fairly well, i think.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgB_XZnmS0F-1bvkkXSz-nU4IN5rI-I7N4bA3Ry0vmN7_s03jvGrnesnJ8iFTOarxJhkHgs6HwFKZcOeSqJyCu3uo93ynswZPHjdULvP8wsEE6l7y0xjfPK7Y0aV3kB6i0uUN9F_Mgl0ds/s1600/chunky_knit_hat_5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="490" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgB_XZnmS0F-1bvkkXSz-nU4IN5rI-I7N4bA3Ry0vmN7_s03jvGrnesnJ8iFTOarxJhkHgs6HwFKZcOeSqJyCu3uo93ynswZPHjdULvP8wsEE6l7y0xjfPK7Y0aV3kB6i0uUN9F_Mgl0ds/s640/chunky_knit_hat_5.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
i'm so glad it's feeling like fall, and i'm pretty sure this kid is too. bring on the apple picking, pumpkin carving, cider making and hay rides.<br />
<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJJKOQOAMqjloE3R5d7uirEHTRIGxdO4zbV0aI4dzMTxdHGccm8Fp8efLmnBmJJsq2Kq43sS_xGtWoPi5MaZqU9YOJhzPSS5-tZnDUIh2mfl2NK9aCm96wMrpZjghDV1BUxjC6nAf0Z1Y/s1600/tiny_kitchen_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJJKOQOAMqjloE3R5d7uirEHTRIGxdO4zbV0aI4dzMTxdHGccm8Fp8efLmnBmJJsq2Kq43sS_xGtWoPi5MaZqU9YOJhzPSS5-tZnDUIh2mfl2NK9aCm96wMrpZjghDV1BUxjC6nAf0Z1Y/s640/tiny_kitchen_1.jpg" width="476" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
it all started with a perfectly acceptable, brand new <a href="http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S49874533/">ikea play kitchen</a>, which i could have left alone and margot would have loved it just as much. but where would the fun be in that.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqdKDCgnjPINrDJPWt9vKV0ff-GGP2_4zg_0mOxfnrCBj9auSMBzJtx5s-aTjq1h6Z_EQjZJN8ImvWJl2ULXIpZwpMSY7ihFlVFlt58U5PAj-KbTboal3_tSaLcKghPR0CLulhkXT0REQ/s1600/tiny_kitchen_3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqdKDCgnjPINrDJPWt9vKV0ff-GGP2_4zg_0mOxfnrCBj9auSMBzJtx5s-aTjq1h6Z_EQjZJN8ImvWJl2ULXIpZwpMSY7ihFlVFlt58U5PAj-KbTboal3_tSaLcKghPR0CLulhkXT0REQ/s640/tiny_kitchen_3.jpg" width="378" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
my first update was to paint all of the natural toned wood, other than the counter top, white. for this i just sanded it and then primed and painted it using supplies leftover from various house projects. i also stained the counter top a golden tone. i found that you really have to sand the wood well to get the stain to take, as whatever clear coat ikea uses is super durable. in my first attempt (or maybe two...) i didn't sand enough and ended up with a blotchy stain job. i ultimately found that checking the wood with a wet rag after sanding helped to ensure all of the clear coat was removed--if the wood soaked in the water, it was good to stain, otherwise, more sanding. since it's plywood though, aggressive sanding can penetrate the first ply, so if you want to try it out yourself, be careful. this only happened in a few spots for me, and those ended up getting covered up by the sink and brackets. after painting and staining, i also gave everything two coats of polyacrylic so that it could withstand toddlerness.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlOf08s9w4dcNU8XLYdc5OlATPNDEYh57LMF9tkxOc15K7cyfRgYkui3O-vXzlMgTnCRE26NjT8M1AogpzhSaVK17Qkp4LozhNRN5duSAwDhuQPru5PSG9f53HQOjWMws8HTcRAfLf4Xk/s1600/tiny_kitchen_2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="468" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlOf08s9w4dcNU8XLYdc5OlATPNDEYh57LMF9tkxOc15K7cyfRgYkui3O-vXzlMgTnCRE26NjT8M1AogpzhSaVK17Qkp4LozhNRN5duSAwDhuQPru5PSG9f53HQOjWMws8HTcRAfLf4Xk/s640/tiny_kitchen_2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
next i may have gotten a little spray paint happy. the frame for the burner and the sink got painted white (originally grey) and most anything else that was within reach was painted gold. this included the updated handles (<a href="http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/96670683/">these</a>), the stove knobs that we added (from lowes i think), the knobs for the pot holders (<a href="http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/40222259/">these</a>), the faucet, the rod along the back, and the plastic legs...and maybe even the buttons for the stove lights. oh my that's a long list...typing it out makes me feel like maybe i have a problem...is there a twelve step program for this...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5GbVaZ58cJZTojDGBIPEl_cg_1SVhuW2Lw7M23agJ0IVFF3pKtHT0JnW32pQ0NUV4zttBeN281DYxmr3UbD4zY7MkbQybut8A-6_G5FCiSWH6cEpSbxFnsG3m4X88yji2ZbbErPPGqOA/s1600/tiny_kitchen_4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="554" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5GbVaZ58cJZTojDGBIPEl_cg_1SVhuW2Lw7M23agJ0IVFF3pKtHT0JnW32pQ0NUV4zttBeN281DYxmr3UbD4zY7MkbQybut8A-6_G5FCiSWH6cEpSbxFnsG3m4X88yji2ZbbErPPGqOA/s640/tiny_kitchen_4.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
then, after an amusingly long assembly process (remind me to never install a real size ikea kitchen), it was time to accessorize. the <a href="http://hopingforrocketships.blogspot.com/2015/09/tiny-things-for-tiny-kitchen.html">tiny pot holders</a> fit in nicely.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEip7FfQ_6X0h1uFEFQeGphEEy-TvbH5_WMA8rDFnOB6mHxNpBUa4KgPV0kJkDyM9JDeIbeeRi0scxq8NF5B1CB9AFttLaeZvBbiojfVVBzI7Mk8BG4NJ2SnNzHq5dhzN4WeNVWS5UoBYrY/s1600/tiny_kitchen_5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="498" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEip7FfQ_6X0h1uFEFQeGphEEy-TvbH5_WMA8rDFnOB6mHxNpBUa4KgPV0kJkDyM9JDeIbeeRi0scxq8NF5B1CB9AFttLaeZvBbiojfVVBzI7Mk8BG4NJ2SnNzHq5dhzN4WeNVWS5UoBYrY/s640/tiny_kitchen_5.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
as do the salt and pepper shakers. and this rhino that i got from hobby lobby. i couldn't resist it. he didn't even require a spray paint job. the plant is fake, as margot can't be trusted, and also from ikea. the rod along the back came with hooks for hanging pots, utensils and the like, but margot hasn't figured them out yet. so for now, her utensils live in an old lyle's golden syrup can.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEwPRckP314eSZv8ObEof8JYBG7pey0Yg1qfG7ojjm9dKaYjt0wQ4rTPIUd-1bJsLwivR20p9hAbaN1og52RwlA5NapHafid9d6xs-OIJ4rh10OtIZo3WK8Sx3TrWsm5KrrpjLB_mNPu0/s1600/tiny_kitchen_6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEwPRckP314eSZv8ObEof8JYBG7pey0Yg1qfG7ojjm9dKaYjt0wQ4rTPIUd-1bJsLwivR20p9hAbaN1og52RwlA5NapHafid9d6xs-OIJ4rh10OtIZo3WK8Sx3TrWsm5KrrpjLB_mNPu0/s640/tiny_kitchen_6.jpg" width="458" /></a></div>
<br />
this is a very misleading picture. margot has only had the kitchen for a week, and the cupboard and oven are never this tidy. but one can pretend, right? here, the yellow colander is from world market and the tiny milk jug is once again from hobby lobby (and its cap may have been spray painted...oy...)<br />

there are also lights! much to the excitement of the small one. the star marquee thing was from target ($2.70 on clearance!) and we added a touch led to the top of the oven, for checking on your soup and cookies.<br />

the burners even glow red (though it looks orange in this picture). this may be my favorite feature. and probably one of marogt's too. she turns them both on and then exclaims 'i cooking pastas!'.<br />

so, there you have it. my ridiculously unnecessary but oh so awesome tiny kitchen reno. it makes me happy every time i see it. which is often, as it lives in our living room.libbyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06286438360185176313noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8134524590556392582.post-92074885748350877432015-09-11T17:19:00.000-04:002015-09-11T17:27:26.201-04:00tiny things for a tiny kitchen.margot turns two on monday. which is basically absurd. where did this <a href="http://hopingforrocketships.blogspot.com/2013/09/margot.html">tiny nugget</a> go?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
for her present, i'm wrapping up the world's tiniest kitchen remodel, thanks to <a href="http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S49874533/">ikea</a>. with the grand reveal of the full project still upcoming, i couldn't help but share the various tiny accessories projects that i've been working on, starting with some ridiculously undersized textiles.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSMP22ZxtvIhZRXxaosxqmUZXONnmkqnfF6TwG6PsoZPA5VpIdu4FqvOQaJ1ilMnlFUnjk-EtEH4SAdiSLSpBzHJ_W6rKm8sd3SJW8-OS3UVBhT8AHAYWQ04XyrQAlm66-YT-wmJGYwEQ/s1600/tiny_kitchen_accessories_diy_2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="498" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSMP22ZxtvIhZRXxaosxqmUZXONnmkqnfF6TwG6PsoZPA5VpIdu4FqvOQaJ1ilMnlFUnjk-EtEH4SAdiSLSpBzHJ_W6rKm8sd3SJW8-OS3UVBhT8AHAYWQ04XyrQAlm66-YT-wmJGYwEQ/s640/tiny_kitchen_accessories_diy_2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
a tiny tea towel and tiny pot holders! for all of your kitchening needs. continuing with the black and gold theme, a salt and pepper shaker.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJAFcqWzRVEQ9jfEpSQlXKvRNxVPmCm1TwO5nyE8UxfeuUvxoQPD6wfTUmOZHlo9sTpkPdQTB5tDAWjf32-Me3Qj0umOmF0GigpH6S5QVvGsEL_ztaa0DzIrG2Lz7yj7pf_euXfbgzeWM/s1600/tiny_kitchen_accessories_diy_3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="488" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJAFcqWzRVEQ9jfEpSQlXKvRNxVPmCm1TwO5nyE8UxfeuUvxoQPD6wfTUmOZHlo9sTpkPdQTB5tDAWjf32-Me3Qj0umOmF0GigpH6S5QVvGsEL_ztaa0DzIrG2Lz7yj7pf_euXfbgzeWM/s640/tiny_kitchen_accessories_diy_3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
for these, i bought two $1 packs of salt and pepper shakers from the grocery and applied some <a href="http://www.thebay.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/en/thebay/home/serveware/fairmont-park-dotstripe-salt--pepper-set">pinspiration</a> in the form of gold tape and black stickers. the best part of these is that i was able to pry off the bottom, empty the contents, and fill them about halfway with popcorn kernels. now they make a really satisfying shake-shake sound and are still fully sealed. and i used the emptied salt and pepper to fill our shakers (waste-not).<br />
<br />
and then, no tiny kitchen is complete without some play food. this may be the first of many posts about play food makes...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-un_obVw-MhscgY3JPXCJJqWDm5Aet6hdVxRWv4hS2lr7cZCvVT2jKKFaj-qeGvBskcJGbO-w17M3bKKShfFt6me0MKCjVmEFQi_MG0m2EIjeHARrCEmcud-IZ2sJcFRw94RpZXxB7VE/s1600/tiny_kitchen_accessories_diy_4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="508" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-un_obVw-MhscgY3JPXCJJqWDm5Aet6hdVxRWv4hS2lr7cZCvVT2jKKFaj-qeGvBskcJGbO-w17M3bKKShfFt6me0MKCjVmEFQi_MG0m2EIjeHARrCEmcud-IZ2sJcFRw94RpZXxB7VE/s640/tiny_kitchen_accessories_diy_4.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
the blueberries are simply wood beads, dyed with some RIT dye i had on hand, and the strawberries were made following <a href="http://breadandbuttons.typepad.com/Microsoft%20Word%20-%20Strawberry%20Tutorial%20word.pdf">these instructions</a>, doubling up on the leaves for added cuteness. i found the cardboard berry crates half off at hobby lobby. too cute to resist.<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
i'm pretty sure margot's going to be a huge fan. maybe because i'm terrible with suprises and have already let her play with some of the things as i've worked on them. who can resist this kid!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_twCaa5SyB3T5vw8K-BXclG4FT8AWNU4WM2M3IvqJAkJ_qnLB0xT-kQAk78LV9OVMr9GyrB98KyWnkhmYj56JOmXjG_Tk4JgqpzA_hEPBO5TCTKGD7Gs0aKxCwqynCGbRBHeewreMLTU/s1600/margot.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_twCaa5SyB3T5vw8K-BXclG4FT8AWNU4WM2M3IvqJAkJ_qnLB0xT-kQAk78LV9OVMr9GyrB98KyWnkhmYj56JOmXjG_Tk4JgqpzA_hEPBO5TCTKGD7Gs0aKxCwqynCGbRBHeewreMLTU/s640/margot.jpg" width="622" /></a></div>

not me. that's for sure. mom's a sucker.libbyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06286438360185176313noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8134524590556392582.post-64001596218157268002015-08-17T15:47:00.000-04:002015-08-17T15:47:00.368-04:00flying geese.i've finally gotten around to making another quilt, thanks to the motivation from a certain pregnant sister-in-law. i think it's my new favorite sewing project.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfw9D1-hOiOU-a_oUUojGVX4s-Z61nGfWqFr6unOXfb8S5CuAs7wfMV8YuJf-ViccXeYOXryDOj-vZEXo8o6iINwLm9FEXDpvzbozjkxS2gmWTnYz8BLVtrkl9mzCOkkl34F-PQck3Xrs/s1600/flying_geese_quilt_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfw9D1-hOiOU-a_oUUojGVX4s-Z61nGfWqFr6unOXfb8S5CuAs7wfMV8YuJf-ViccXeYOXryDOj-vZEXo8o6iINwLm9FEXDpvzbozjkxS2gmWTnYz8BLVtrkl9mzCOkkl34F-PQck3Xrs/s640/flying_geese_quilt_1.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
i mean, what's not to love about those haphazard flying geese and that trendy baby boy colorway. i must admit, it was super hard to part with.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKmC8VzQBHplInOYBmAwLJuYL2NqyxThp713YARPJMP2nYhlycgjwsIX1IAdsf1nwSY-kP93h2td3AJW3pFbnHO082i0Hop368CFynkNo9dIazBVfTmTrIso2bBGO131P7vNJ5T7jr4Yw/s1600/flying_geese_quilt_2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKmC8VzQBHplInOYBmAwLJuYL2NqyxThp713YARPJMP2nYhlycgjwsIX1IAdsf1nwSY-kP93h2td3AJW3pFbnHO082i0Hop368CFynkNo9dIazBVfTmTrIso2bBGO131P7vNJ5T7jr4Yw/s640/flying_geese_quilt_2.jpg" width="464" /></a></div>
<br />
and then there's the back, in a complementary charcoal batik from <a href="http://andoverfabrics.com/Grid.php?GroupName=Handcrafted">alison glass's handcrafted collection</a>. so. much. pretty. coincidentally, anna over at noodlehead posted <a href="http://www.noodle-head.com/2015/08/handcrafted-anywhere-skirt.html">a skirt</a> made from this same fabric last week. i think i may need to make a margot sized version with the little bit that i have left.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcCDQ3DozSOlDgUghGnHi0IdMX6v5l_V-dGYZcF7px6uWovVcpxzJNLHFc_16EKgHYnYI3AR4rf30wVDb4US9TgzP_kdcGBxCxkvMncL3Mp2FzlwBGB9NttyvYVYoDK-lCLlOmDDgZi4w/s1600/flying_geese_quilt_5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcCDQ3DozSOlDgUghGnHi0IdMX6v5l_V-dGYZcF7px6uWovVcpxzJNLHFc_16EKgHYnYI3AR4rf30wVDb4US9TgzP_kdcGBxCxkvMncL3Mp2FzlwBGB9NttyvYVYoDK-lCLlOmDDgZi4w/s640/flying_geese_quilt_5.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
i trimmed it out in a black and white stripe, which i love every time i see it in other quilts (which is all of the time, because it's mad popular these days). i'm glad i went through with it, because i almost chickened out at the last minute, partially out of fear and partially because i cut my first bias tape wrong (don't ask, it was terribly sad...). but i did it, and it's awesome.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUZQWmCFan-_wTP_iWK-PWb3QV0En90eNi7amuCWfv69EaWNg5dS880_2xHFUPI76wuSHva7IGPZaYV2X3Uqj8pq4DnBwRn9yShrRdVbSnHk4BrwLp8DICbL3qKyNIDoCT2hiRLChxfQo/s1600/flying_geese_quilt_3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUZQWmCFan-_wTP_iWK-PWb3QV0En90eNi7amuCWfv69EaWNg5dS880_2xHFUPI76wuSHva7IGPZaYV2X3Uqj8pq4DnBwRn9yShrRdVbSnHk4BrwLp8DICbL3qKyNIDoCT2hiRLChxfQo/s640/flying_geese_quilt_3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
gah! i miss it already. but, alas, it's gone to a good home.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxf_EPX2qkcxIQVa41OMhQp-W3l9Gqeuh9KCgJBR0pzPtOt-cuXt7vvy6lipKXaVpzlGfv_RVThunmuGdpVIWWNCU_X9Uf7ZtUfXcuJ0v_hyphenhyphenYvzILyLGnD0fJHmPsJZtAJwLY6l5qTB1I/s1600/flying_geese_quilt_4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxf_EPX2qkcxIQVa41OMhQp-W3l9Gqeuh9KCgJBR0pzPtOt-cuXt7vvy6lipKXaVpzlGfv_RVThunmuGdpVIWWNCU_X9Uf7ZtUfXcuJ0v_hyphenhyphenYvzILyLGnD0fJHmPsJZtAJwLY6l5qTB1I/s640/flying_geese_quilt_4.jpg" width="418" /></a></div>
<br />
and, at least i have lots of extra fabric left in my stash. be prepared to see these fabrics popping up in lots of future projects.<br />
<br />
and yes, that is an abacus. who needs a quilt rack.libbyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06286438360185176313noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8134524590556392582.post-75169347182279957532015-07-13T17:37:00.000-04:002015-08-24T13:02:09.665-04:00sandbox.our yard has a new addition.<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

every toddler needs a sweet sandbox. for dinosaurs and trucks and the like.<br />

<br />
and thanks to a some pretty awesome pin-spiration over at <a href="http://www.smallfriendly.com/small-friendly/2011/04/deluxe-diy-sandbox.html">small + friendly</a>, a magical three hour toddler nap, and a superhero of a dad, margot now has the coolest sandbox ever.<br />

and this deck has a secret. when the play is over, it hinges back to become the lid of sandbox. so. much. clever.<br />

<br />
we modified <a href="http://www.smallfriendly.com/small-friendly/2012/04/deluxe-diy-sandbox-tutorial.html">small + friendly's</a> awesome plans a little bit, using one by sixes on the top instead of two by fours to cut down on the weight a bit (it's still super heavy--i can lift it, but i count it as a workout) and instead of the handle for the deck to rest on we had to use four by four legs. since our yard isn't level, we needed them to be different lengths, which you can kind of see in the picture above. and to keep them from sticking ten inches up into the air when it's in lid mode, the legs are hinged so the swing out of the way. engineered.<br />

since saturday, the sandbox has gotten a lot of action, as you can tell from the many outfits in these pictures. i'm sure it will continue to be the most popular spot in our yard for quite some time.<br />
<br />
fun fact, margot refuses to step in the sand without shoes on. in the second picture, she's barefoot, and standing on the deck. no amount of coaxing could get her in that sand until i suggested shoes and she got super excited. weird kid.libbyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06286438360185176313noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8134524590556392582.post-60350770094780849332015-06-28T15:10:00.002-04:002015-06-28T15:10:36.649-04:00treasures.i now have a super awesome box of family treasures that i'm pretty overwhelmed by and in awe of.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi455cEIJ1yO0VRmSIcbko7atNpDVl2v9mpifdmYGTokGDMQo8M2Z0Er7ivg-f44FzqLV7932thQDf0DaabauPmR62NeKpO5D5TsgzudeSqioeSsaJoh07yQd2lRiRgINdhdFCDkKlTFUI/s1600/treasures_all.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="450" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi455cEIJ1yO0VRmSIcbko7atNpDVl2v9mpifdmYGTokGDMQo8M2Z0Er7ivg-f44FzqLV7932thQDf0DaabauPmR62NeKpO5D5TsgzudeSqioeSsaJoh07yQd2lRiRgINdhdFCDkKlTFUI/s640/treasures_all.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
these are my grandma's. my dad's mom. she used to quilt on saturday with the ladies. they were evidently super productive. in this box there is a finished twin-sized quilt top, enough completed squares for two more, a completed set of pinwheels, and the beginnings of another twin-sized quilt. there were also a ton of small quilted pieces with an unknown final destiny. those are my favorites.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgk4pwOND_2LCf0TY_QoYkVdRHpY-62UO4Cg9ULpfcil2-Z0d4l78T0cZjbKiYue0PXPw_ZxEzB6ks2lI4tJRTsg_Rs02hrajdc6j62Nr0dMb2U1pi_xlowwGA17iKFneSHWp28djHDt4k/s1600/treasures3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgk4pwOND_2LCf0TY_QoYkVdRHpY-62UO4Cg9ULpfcil2-Z0d4l78T0cZjbKiYue0PXPw_ZxEzB6ks2lI4tJRTsg_Rs02hrajdc6j62Nr0dMb2U1pi_xlowwGA17iKFneSHWp28djHDt4k/s640/treasures3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
like these navy and white half square triangles, that were perhaps meant to be part of a flying geese quilt? i think there are a half dozen or so of these, in strips of three or four.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjniM7VjQzDisSrubeh2u8pEuuEoB_xAWzEugeejGsIpdzLGlh_G_xtlsrOdAtqrXjQbS-poTelheT5NONcY3WTygKegDoIXqQXKcOJ32sDkJ0ZqtdNV7x2dN2e7HpJ4UH2AJ5r4S4IAhU/s1600/treasures4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="520" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjniM7VjQzDisSrubeh2u8pEuuEoB_xAWzEugeejGsIpdzLGlh_G_xtlsrOdAtqrXjQbS-poTelheT5NONcY3WTygKegDoIXqQXKcOJ32sDkJ0ZqtdNV7x2dN2e7HpJ4UH2AJ5r4S4IAhU/s640/treasures4.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
there are so many amazing vintage fabrics, like this red and white one. i mean, it has birds, houses and lutes on it! you can't get this kind of stuff these days. i think there are only four half-squares of these, so i'll have to think of something super awesome for them.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcgDfLa6J9F2u-hKlTmfZpkNWO5dTzal7Ic7Vpl4mhcXG7L0hpynfk30NgkuLU7DCuWp2lcaidePzS7aDmECXrgMNwCm5IcSZJlKvfK4T_xATwLgM1lYExW1Q5ZTdBnHdktzb13NU63n0/s1600/treasures1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="422" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcgDfLa6J9F2u-hKlTmfZpkNWO5dTzal7Ic7Vpl4mhcXG7L0hpynfk30NgkuLU7DCuWp2lcaidePzS7aDmECXrgMNwCm5IcSZJlKvfK4T_xATwLgM1lYExW1Q5ZTdBnHdktzb13NU63n0/s640/treasures1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
i also really love this black and white one, with its happenstance polka dot style, and this floral one. i love how modern they seem, despite their age.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjj4PeeW1kBmZZLLtdECATauX5-zmKHeP6xC-0TgQ4iUWSMolqsUreq_hBJRAGFO8gfBycBvsf6Tv4xpf1lHevgYsKW9rY1EhDmnoEHpH7au0X3TvOrEE4MXF-5n2WjGmWyS3sdBPWOWLo/s1600/treasures5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="470" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjj4PeeW1kBmZZLLtdECATauX5-zmKHeP6xC-0TgQ4iUWSMolqsUreq_hBJRAGFO8gfBycBvsf6Tv4xpf1lHevgYsKW9rY1EhDmnoEHpH7au0X3TvOrEE4MXF-5n2WjGmWyS3sdBPWOWLo/s640/treasures5.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
and i'm probably most excited about these squares, off-white with vibrant kelly green x's on them. they were going to have a floral motif on them, like in the center of the first picture. that square is the only one that got that far. i like them with just the x's though, and i think there's enough for a twin sized quilt. i'm picturing a margot big-girl bed quilt backed in something awesomely whimsical, like cotton + steel's <a href="http://www.hawthornethreads.com/fabric/designer/alexia_marcelle_abegg/mesa/fern_book_in_navy">mesa fern book</a>, <a href="http://www.hawthornethreads.com/fabric/designer/rashida_coleman_hale/mochi/mochi_floral_in_purple">mochi mochi floral</a>, or these adorable <a href="https://www.blogger.com/http://www.hawthornethreads.com/fabric/designer/rashida_coleman_hale/mochi/moon_bunnies_in_navy"><span id="goog_1169396739"></span>bunnies<span id="goog_1169396740"></span></a>.<br />

<br />
my mind is swimming with the possibilities of all of these beauties. the vintage patchwork may not always be my style, but i can't help but appreciate the masterful craftsmanship of them and their family connection. i think i should start up saturday sewing parties of my own. anyone care to join?<br />
<br />libbyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06286438360185176313noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8134524590556392582.post-2450799571880847542015-05-26T23:00:00.001-04:002015-05-27T12:36:40.006-04:00romping.i'll admit it, i don't understand the popularity of rompers on grown people. however, on small people, they're irresistibly adorable.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghsd0gsUL3qYJ3MToscNPIhsvIZ8TZvEujGdVF7mnspFh39xGV8w25XpH5k54dC9TL4QxeYw64jqOunO5SbQ3t1hEUiLG3tBm8SakzBrj8LJw91m0xsqnmmZsLY8WykE1zoO3jTU7qGzg/s1600/romper_7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="548" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghsd0gsUL3qYJ3MToscNPIhsvIZ8TZvEujGdVF7mnspFh39xGV8w25XpH5k54dC9TL4QxeYw64jqOunO5SbQ3t1hEUiLG3tBm8SakzBrj8LJw91m0xsqnmmZsLY8WykE1zoO3jTU7qGzg/s640/romper_7.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
i've been itching to sew one for margot for awhile, and finally got around to it on sunday afternoon, while there were far more productive things i should have been doing, like laundry, which i'm currently still neglecting while writing this post...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPylb0RtHpcRVA5BF8cxLKUHADVTVELBlh2jVvN1j-7fHIMO3DDJgL6u8tkmnFayzUPJWfe6tXHiSIgAThaF-7fRsBGXTfE8TMGnuoG3hSSvcj-W2IEIQdrHR4NBCJykgQ_QbReE3rHmU/s1600/romper_2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="570" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPylb0RtHpcRVA5BF8cxLKUHADVTVELBlh2jVvN1j-7fHIMO3DDJgL6u8tkmnFayzUPJWfe6tXHiSIgAThaF-7fRsBGXTfE8TMGnuoG3hSSvcj-W2IEIQdrHR4NBCJykgQ_QbReE3rHmU/s640/romper_2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
i'll call this a semi-self-drafted pattern. for the bottom, i used the <a href="http://craftingzuzzy.blogspot.dk/2012/07/box-pleat-shorts-tutorial.html">box pleat shorts</a> pattern that i've sewn <a href="http://hopingforrocketships.blogspot.com/2015/02/sewn-toddler-shortsin-february.html">once before</a>. i thought the gathered and cuffed legs would look super cute on a romper (and i do believe i was correct).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOvYLKjIkrg8PS0zI4t1bWboBb5ZqWHqYbX6ktY64YBVRhu3KwP5LHdewz9e3gzo8XJjJqzUiI3xMSiNgoHiMt1eapuG0O-jMQxAEU1592_BAgtz1mrzMQfsYxh5BYJ3rA8v8u6UQoCeo/s1600/romper_6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="508" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOvYLKjIkrg8PS0zI4t1bWboBb5ZqWHqYbX6ktY64YBVRhu3KwP5LHdewz9e3gzo8XJjJqzUiI3xMSiNgoHiMt1eapuG0O-jMQxAEU1592_BAgtz1mrzMQfsYxh5BYJ3rA8v8u6UQoCeo/s640/romper_6.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
i removed the faux fly from the pattern and the waistband, since i didn't need either of these for the romper. i added pockets, and used some bright yellow piping to line them, for a fun pop of color that i think plays down the old-lady-ness of the floral, making it more toddler appropriate.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTpnai4JwACuZiTBBx998NGZesdnjgFlKXKLPfRnxv30_rLFTTeq-dXMiZuVQuGrfWdEsExsY9EDg7YfLU07GhXOX__fTabDq06IBcWDmMZn_WnB30VRG6TUAWcphTTOpMyBrnpBWYxuY/s1600/romper_3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTpnai4JwACuZiTBBx998NGZesdnjgFlKXKLPfRnxv30_rLFTTeq-dXMiZuVQuGrfWdEsExsY9EDg7YfLU07GhXOX__fTabDq06IBcWDmMZn_WnB30VRG6TUAWcphTTOpMyBrnpBWYxuY/s640/romper_3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
the floral seems old-lady-like because it was, in fact, from a thrifted old lady dress. it's a super light weight woven cotton, perfect for summer. and it only cost me one dollar! after drafting the pattern for the top from one of margot's tank tops, i was pretty excited to realize that i could use the neckline and button band from the original dress. hooray for upcycling and time saving.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8nhFy8vUKpz22MOrvyk_YsnH-0q5sof4hPgKCAqVSup8pnaCsNKHiLHhDNFFP7nm2dS3o1ga6FSbUTqKHFqAuNPhuvfs7VunKBKiWs08AP2-OK8WE5vncbaItyp4F_FlQLuBwhsXpCXU/s1600/romper_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8nhFy8vUKpz22MOrvyk_YsnH-0q5sof4hPgKCAqVSup8pnaCsNKHiLHhDNFFP7nm2dS3o1ga6FSbUTqKHFqAuNPhuvfs7VunKBKiWs08AP2-OK8WE5vncbaItyp4F_FlQLuBwhsXpCXU/s640/romper_1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
any time that i may have saved sewing the top, i definitely lost in bringing the top piece and the shorts together. i drafted the pattern while margot was napping, so the trial fit was hilarious. i had about two too many inches in length on the top, so the shorts were super low riding. after much ripping, cutting and re-sewing, that issue was resolved. now she's no longer at risk of tripping over her romper shorts.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirGCe0Peqdy7w2RIj8-xBfNnvHAw6lsWFBfG1N0RU9kvYW6yfDt-rBGzcSA8sYOdfRPsfT7hZaU3Kv2ptpZstY4rTEgLb5O2tZQadk0XE1CqGHPffNlEcjbifEqa71oXUDDG9PiG8tXJc/s1600/romper_8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="580" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirGCe0Peqdy7w2RIj8-xBfNnvHAw6lsWFBfG1N0RU9kvYW6yfDt-rBGzcSA8sYOdfRPsfT7hZaU3Kv2ptpZstY4rTEgLb5O2tZQadk0XE1CqGHPffNlEcjbifEqa71oXUDDG9PiG8tXJc/s640/romper_8.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
the back also took two takes. at first, the straps were too far apart, so margot kept having an off the shoulder number. i'm pretty proud that i actually went back and fixed it, because i was pretty close to just calling it good enough after all of the rework woes i had already gone through. i bit the bullet, ripped it up yet again, and while i was at it i also took an inch or two out of the elastic so that the overall fit is much better. learning.<br />

after all of that, i'm really pleased with this one. sewing it was satisfyingly challenging, and the finished product is super cute, even if it's not the most practical thing to wear. i was pretty proud of jon the other day, successfully changing her diaper while she was wearing it. and he didn't even complain once. such a winner.<br />

margot likes that it has pockets. she also likes that the pockets contained fruit loops during this photo shoot. sometimes, parenting = bribing.<br />
